I participated in SewCalGal’s 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge. Each month a tutorial was provided by an experienced and inspirational teacher and a challenge was given for the month. October’s tutorial was given by Teri Lucas who challenged us to combine different motifs in pleasing ways.
I created this whole cloth quilt in response to that challenge. I layered silk dupioni atop Orient batting and backed the piece with a cotton Fat Back. I marked the border and the tree trunk and free handed the rest of the piece. I used Superior Kimono silk thread for the background quilting and Gutterman‘s poly for the tree and details.
The title emerged as I pondered what had been put on cloth: “Bend Don’t Break”. This happened to be a challenging point in life and the subliminal message was to bend in the wind, but not break!
This is the front of the quilt.
