Good Vibrations 2

January 17, 2011

Who knew it could take this long to complete an 8″ square wholecloth?? Design is something I am working hard on and the point of this piece, for me, was to take a simple design and play with value more than color, to use value to push some motifs forward, others back.

Well, I got the lower left flower to recede alright, recede into oblivion!  That burgandy thread was way too dark. So I tried a purple-still too dark; tried a lavender-it shouted; tried salmon-ugh.

After 6 hours of unstitching, even more thread choices, and different fill motifs, I got to this medium blue and the original feather fill. Much better.

I am surprised at how small the margin of error is on this tiny piece. It certainly caused me to work on design, color, density of stitching and value, all at once. Although I am not satisfied with this result, I may have to stick with this one as my deadline is looming.

I did try a new marking method on this one, the heat eraseable “Frixion” pen by Pilot. Just hit it with your iron, dry or steam, and the mark goes away. The pen comes in red, blue and black.

Surprisingly, the red mark showed up beautifully on the navy fabric. I did notice that it seemed to lighten the fabric a bit when the mark was ironed away. In this case, that was fine as I hit the mark with my stitching-it wouldn’t show anyway. So the jury is out on this one for me.

One of the reasons I haven’t posted in a week is that I’ve been loading more and better photos to my portfolio area.

I had some of my quilts professionally photographed so there is a huge improvement in photo quality for those quilts I still have in my posession. Please stop by my portfolio for a look!

Thanks! Yes, it is for the SAQA trunk show. I just got back from one of my quilting groups and got a good suggestion to improve it further. I’ll post when I get done.
