Come See My Work!

September 20, 2011

I am showing my work for the first time in a gallery-I’m so excited! I delivered my piece “Renewal” yesterday to the Cinema Place Gallery in Hayward, Ca for their “QuiltEssential Event“. From Sept 12-Nov 21 the gallery will be filled with high quality fiber art from Northern California-don’t miss this show!Once I arrived at the gallery I had to solve a problem. I wasn’t sure of the hanging system I needed to use, so I arrived with a long wooden slat, nails, hammer, saw, measuring tape and sand paper….only to discover that I actually needed eyelet screws. I walked to the nearest hardware store and prevailed upon the kind gentleman that worked there to help me set in the eyelet screws. What a relief!

The quilt is whole cloth ombre cotton with a sheer poly border and free motion quilted throughout. The seed for this quilt was planted when I took Carla Barrett’s “Quilt Whisperer” class last fall. The quilt motifs were inspired by the gorgous underwater beauty I experienced in Fiji several years ago. I had great fun making this piece.
I found it difficult to photograph-it just continued to come out funky. The detail shots actually are more representative of the piece than the full sized shot.

I used a wool batt to achieve dimension from the quilting. The pod-like motifs and feathery plants were quilted with hand dyed cotton thread; silk thread was used for the rest of the quilt.

When I delivered my piece yesterday I got to glance at some of the work that was being shown. It’s a great collection. Since you can’t really get the effect of my work from these photos, you’ll just have to go see the show!
