Elk Grove Quilt Show

September 18, 2011

It’s Fall Quilt Show Season! I’ve never been to the Elk Grove Quilt Show before and it was a wonderful show. The location has good lighting and plenty of room to see the quilts-a rarity.

There were quite a few gorgeous applique quilts on display-apparently an Applique Mini-Group chose Piece ‘O Cakes Design’s “Millie’s Garden” as their Block of the Month for the year. The next 6 quilts were all made from the same pattern-just look at the variety:

Irene Takimoto’s quilt showed her beautiful use of color and expert workmanship.Joyce Moldenhauer used wonderful, bold color for her quilt. I didn’t take a close up unfortunately, but her quilting added a lot. The photo quality is poor-must be operator error…

This quilt by Karen Koenig was one of my favorites. It doesn’t show in the photo as well as it did in person-the striped sashing on the bias was fabulous. It added so much energy to the quilt even though the colors were quite soft. I love stripes on the bias!Linda Bermann’s used beautiful, soft color on her quilt. The card says it’s quilted by “Holly Nichols”-THE Holly Nichols I would imagine?!
This quilt by Marion Mullen was just the happiest quilt in the show-doesn’t this just make you smile?
Jan Soules had a unique take on this quilt with her choice of color and fabric-she’s an expert at using unusual fabrics! The quilting by Deb Lopez was gorgeous.

I am seeing more embroidery-embellished quilts at shows now. This beauty was made and pieced by Terry Harman using the Quilt-As-You-Go method of assembly. I thought she did a beautiful job with color, fabric selection and the use of her embroidery machine to produce texture and color.
Some of these detail shots show her use of embroidery to add texture.
Here she used a twin needle to very nice effect:   I enjoyed the whimsy of this art piece “A Big Fish to Fry”. It was the result of a Whisper Challenge where a quilter will make a piece based on a photo. She then sends a photo of her completed piece to the next quilter in line who will make her own quilt inspired by the previous quilter’s work. It’s kinda like that gossip game you played when you were a kid. She used fused work, commercial and hand dyed fabrics. Jan Soules knows how to use color and large scale print fabrics! You can see from the detail that there is a lot of texture to this quilt. I love how she combines hand embroidery and machine quilting. I don’t know why my photo is so poor…  I hope you enjoyed your tour of the Elk Grove Quilt Show!

Once again, Jenny, you have hit the highlights of another wonderful quilt show. Sharing these really is inspiring even to a “non quilter.” Love of fabric, color, design and sewing knows no bounds.

Jenny: I feel like I just had an Artist Date from my home. What a beautiful representation of the quilts, the fall colors, and the artistry. I loved my trip through your blog.
