Pacific International Quilt Festival-Part 2
Continuing on with photos from the 2011 Pacific International Quilt Festival, I’ve included photos of the main competition section as well as some special exhibits. I only had a brief time at the show so my photos are not inclusive by any means! The name and title of each piece can be seen by scrolling over the photo.
The following two garments were in the “Ethnic & Cultural Influences” currated by Rachel Clark:I of course love the color but also this coat was artful but very wearable (Gayle Hazen).I’m a sucker for anything sheer and I continued to enjoy this piece as I found so many different textures and layers of interest (Jack Brockette).
Barbara Barrick McKie starts with a photo which she prints onto white fabric, then free-motion quilts. The squirrel really does look like he’s pontificating to me!
Jennifer Day thread painted the woman’s entire body. The realism was so striking and this piece always had someone looking at it, pondering it. It was part of the Layer of Memory exhibit.
This appliqued and embroidered quilt by Ann Horton uses Guatemalan fabric as a tribute to friends across southern borders. It celebrates friendship and family.
JoAnn Hoffman used a silk scarf painted by Shirley JanHobbs and long arm quilted it to a background. I really like the quilting on this as she preserved some of the “puff” and used some restraint on her quilting. This was one of my personal favorites.
I did not realize at the time that the same quilter (JoAnn Hoffman) made this piece and the piece above. She used a hand painted scarf by Puteri Noor which she put upon silk dupioni. She then embroidered and long arm quilted it-so much detail on this! What a beautiful portrait by Sherri Culver of that special time of “waiting”!
Apparently Arnold Friedman was a Quilting Spouse for 25 years and decided to start making his own quilts. This sheer quilt was constructed from 3 free-hanging layers, with printed family photos on the middle layer. So beautiful.
Mary Pal’s piece was part of the “Layers of Memory” section of the exhibit. Mary uses cheesecloth to render this amazing image!
I think everyone took a photo of this quilt. The maker, Sandy Curran, has moved from Baltimore Album to hand dyed portrait pieces-wow!Daniel Rouse described his piece as a “reverse applique stencil on a neutral, improvisational, pieced background”. Very cool! What a chuckle! This is made from the Shout Color Catchers Joni Strother used while pre-washing batiks-makes a statement, huh?
Hope you enjoyed this quick tour of PIQF!
