The River City Quilters’ Guild Show-2012
The annual River City Quilters’ Guild Show was held last weekend in the Scottish Rite Temple in Sacramento, Ca. They always have a great collection of traditional, contemporary, art and applique quilts as well as wearable art. I did not come away with many great photos as the light is pretty low and I just couldn’t seem to get a good photo off. “Red Chair” by Mary Upham. This Best of Show greeted visitors as they walked in and it’s a stunner. Mary worked from her own photo and started this piece in a Ruth McDowell seminar at Asilomar. So almost all that is piecing, not applique!“Young Walt at the Texas Rangers Game” by Connie Horne. Connie worked from a photo of her son and used Photo Shop, sharpies, colored pencils and a machine quilting to create this piece. I love it!“Fractured Star” by Linda Bergmann; quilted by Deb Lopez. This was paper pieced from Civil War reproduction fabrics-I was surprised by that! Great, interesting piece and beautifully quilted by Deb Lopez.“Rainbow Connection” by Jan Soules; quilted by Jan Soules and Lorraine Matthews. Jan is a master at using color and prints. She used a very traditional block to create a unique color wheel. She said it took a lot of time to audition the fabrics to get this “just right’.“Wild Hawaiian Scraps” by Dorothy Blodgett. Dorothy combined scraps from a Hawaiian shirt with solids from her stash to create this unique piece. It was fun and a little loud and charming all at once!“Bunnies on the Champs Elysses” by Jan Soules; quilted by Deb Lopez. Jan took Sue Garman’s bunny pattern, machine appliqued it and had it quilted beautifully by Deb Lopez. As always, she made some very effective fabric choices that make the piece so interesting.“Pots” by Nancy MacDonald. Nancy started this piece during an Elizabeth Barton class at Asilomar. Some really interesting fabric choices created depth and dimension.“Sticks and Stones” by Sunni Hamilton. There was no comment card on this quilt but I just liked the simple beauty of the composition. “Sparkles the Dog” by Susan Sprague. Susan started this quilt in a guild workshop with Linda Schmidt “years ago”. It was inspired by her Siberian Husky puppy. I think it’s just so charming!“Red and White All Over” by Kathy Mitchell. This was inspired by the Red and White Quilt Show at the Armory in New York in March, 2011. Kathy liked one quilt in particular and decided to recreate it herself. I just love a red and white quilt!
Well that is the end of the fall shows-no more til February!
