Foothill Quilt Guild Show-2013
Lucky me, I finally got to go to a spring quilt show, my first of the season. “Prime Time in the Foothills” was this year’s theme for the Foothill Quilters Guild show last weekend. And it was indeed Prime Time-everything was in bloom and it was a spectacular drive to Auburn on a gorgeous sunny day!
Freddy Moran was the Guest Quilter this year and there were probably 25 of Freddy’s colorful quilts on display-you just had to smile when you walked into the room. Who else can use color like this?
Candy Brown was the Featured Quilter and she too had probably 20 quilts on display ranging from hand quilted to hand appliqued and even thread painting. Her work is exquisite and widely varied but skillfully done whatever genre she is in at the moment. I was struck by this diminuitive piece. She took a class from Pam Holland at PIQF and completed this piece in class!
Linda Waddle’s Best of Show was delightful. There were so many layers of interest-my photo may not show that but she stamped/painted/printed using a wide variety of materials and there was much to ponder.
I was intrigued by this piece and by the quilting-it was a wonderful collaboration. Betty Kisbey is an expert appliquer and I enjoyed her color choices.
The quilting added energy to the piece without detracting from it. Beth Foust used the “water” motif in an interesting way that I’ve never seen done. It really helped your eye float through the piece.
Barbara Kiehn had several quilts in the show, all heavy with ribbons. This one is the result of a class with Christine Barnes and boy did she use color and fabric well on this one-I love it! Lin Squires‘ quilting really enhanced the piece.
Oh I know my photo does not do this justice! Barbara Kiehn again with a beautifully designed and pieced quilt-perfectly made. Carla Barrett‘s quilting was just stunning and the judges noticed, awarding her “Best Machine Quilting by a Professional”.
It must have taken me 5 minutes to get my turn to look at this quilt-there was always someone in front of it. Lana La Plante appliqued and quilted this happy quilt and then added charming touches of hand embroidery-lovely!
What a striking quilt! Jane Haworth said she used a photo of a mass of bouys outside of an Oregon restaurant as her inspiration. I simply loved this quilt.
This one had no ribbons on it which surprised me. Carol Walsh used hand dyed wools for this beautiful, textural piece. She said she wanted to experiment with one-patch design-I think she was very successful. I would love to have this in my home!
Linda Waddle started this piece wanting the hand dyed fabric and thread work to tell the story. She felt like that was not enough and hand painted to get the effect she wanted-I think she was very successful-I love this piece.
I hope your weekend was a delightful as mine-spring is in full bloom and it’s Spring Quilt Show Season too!

And this is just a portion of the show. My camera screwed up and wouldn’t let me save more photos. I feel badly that I didn’t have more photos. This show is fabulous!

Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy a quilt show I didn’t have to organize! Love the Linda Waddle leaves – did she add paint to the background or the leaves?
jennyklyon says
Giggle! Yes, a show you didn’t have to make happen! I believe she hand dyed the fabric and painted the leaves on. Great piece!
Beth Foust says

Thank you. Beth

Beth I loved your quilting on Betty’s quilt. It was unique and enhanced the beauty of what she pieced. I loved that flow-y design around the flower pots. Geez, this sounds like Judge’s comments:-/ Really, I just loved the quilting!
