SAQA Donation Quilt-2013

March 12, 2013

After last week’s playtime with my hand dyed wool/sheer/cutwork piece, I was inspired to pull out a hand dyed wool piece I had purchased at my guild’s show in Feb. Patty Henderson dyed this beautiful piece and I knew I had to use it in a similar way.

Spring is busting out all over Northern California and that inspired me to place a flower in the center, and surround it with stylized nature motifs and some curves.

I find Patty’s artistry with hand dyed wool to be breath taking. I layered it atop some hand dyed silk organza and began to free hand my motifs atop the sandwich.

I used Superior Rainbow thread on top and a shockingly bright Highlights in my bobbin.

I love the way the Rainbow thread looks on the hand dyed wool.

The back is fun too. I was surprised by how monochromatic it looked.

The fluorescent orange thread on the orange organza produced quite a value contrast-like!

Each year Studio Art Quilt Associates holds a “One Square Foot” on-line fundraiser in the fall. Individual artists donate 12″ x 12″ pieces to benefit the organization. This will be my donation this year. I don’t have a title for it yet-any ideas?

Cutwork "Debris"
Cutwork “Debris”

I am liking this idea of hand-dyed wool atop organza with the cutout work. And yes, I was absolutely holding my breath the whole time, hoping that I did not cut or gouge the organza! My trusty Dovo scissors helped assure that there would be no such mishaps. Isn’t the pile of leftover cutout pieces divine?

When you hold this piece, it actually drapes beautifully. Oh I can see a garment coming….

This is a really nice effect and your work, as always, is lovely. The combination of wool and silk seems like a good one for loft and drape and all the good things we look for in a textile piece. I’m sure it will make a wonderful garment, too! But the ‘terror’ while cutting–don’t know if I could handle that!

Kathy I was worried the whole time! I wonder if this will work on a bigger piece….

How the heck do you choose which beautiful side to show? Maybe you need to hang it so it dangles like a mobile and you can see both sides? Great work! Reminds me of stained glass a little…

You’re right Roxane-it does look good from both sides. It’s surprising how different it looks from the back.

I had to go back and check your prior post — love, love, love that hot pink! And the hand-dyed wool…Another nugget to tuck away for post-conference play time (May through August!)

It’s really lovely Jenny and I find the ‘back’ as nice as the front… In fact, you should do what they started to do with the old vinyl singles. Instead of an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ side you should have a double ‘A’ side :-)

When exhibiting you can always suspend it in a frame so people can walk around it.

A name is harder… something with ‘through’ to incorporate the cutouts and I was thinking something related to ‘spring-fresh-awakening’ but the double A side is fiery.. (thinking on my feet here) Springing through to the fire… hmmmm… it doesn’t come to me, back over to you! xx

Giggle-“Double A” side! I like your thinking on the name-it is kind of dual personality-ish!

Very striking, almost Hawaiian with that central flower. I wonder how it would look with a light source behind it, shining through the organza.

      March 12, 2013 at 4:20 pm

Thanks Joanna-it actually looks pretty cool with light behind it. It has to be just right or it merely becomes transparent. The orange is a lovely juxtaposition to the green/blue front.

It is even lovelier in person, and it feels devine- the wool, though fairly firm, is sooo soft. The hand-dyed fabrics are beautifully done. Your quilting and cutwork is perfect, as usual!
