2013 Pine Tree Quilt Guild Show
It’s hard to pick a favorite local show, but the Pine Tree Quilt Guild‘s “Springtime in the Pines” is one of my favs. The Pine Tree Guild has a really nice mix of quilters from all genres and one unique part of their show is a gallery that highlights the Mountain Art Quilters. MAQ allows only 40 members and they are a skilled and dedicated group-I love their exhibit and look forward to seeing what they’re showing each year.
“Naima” was the first piece I saw as I exited the Country Store. I love this ethereal piece! Roberta Baker took digital images of her daughter and nature and collaged them into this piece. Her work is unique and intriguing.
This is a hard quilt to photograph but I love this quilt by Carolyn Christiansen. She used the same red silk dupioni throughout, and by using the dimensional nature of the dupioni weave, she achieved this color-on-color effect which is stunning in person. I am actually annoyed because I have had this idea in my head for a long time and even have a few blocks worked up in a similar piece. Carolyn got to it first though and created a beautiful quilt!
“Corals Galore” by Ginny Lee is delightful! She painted the background over cheesecloth and leaves as part of a “black and white plus one color” challenge. She then raw edge collaged and embellished to create this piece. Love, love the quilting!
Karla Rogers made this piece “Do Not Grieve” as her response to the passing of her dear friend Carol Phillips. Karla wrote that Carol would not have wanted her friends to grieve for her as “The joy of the Lord is our strength”. Quilted by Precision Quiltworks. Colored pencil on wholecloth quilt.
Jeanie Ferguson created “Quoth the Raven Nevermore” in response to her son-in-law’s love of ravens and Edgar Allen Poe. She designed, appliqued and hand quilted the entire piece. The details were amazing: Tsukineko inks for shading, a very dimensional raven, wonderful hand quilting, and lots of bits and pieces for texture.
Isn’t that just so cool? Texture galore!
I have seen this mosaic technique before but Sandra Bruce took her “Self Portrait” to another level with her skillful use of fabric and quilting. I think I would definitely recognize her if I met her. And I’m just guessing-bet she has a killer stash!
“Matteo and the Amaryllis” is another mosaic piece created by Sandra Bruce. She based the quilt on a photo she took of her son in Costa Rica. The composition and complimentary color scheme inspired her piece.
A 2/3d grade class created “Postcards From the Planets”, assembled and perhaps designed (?) by Staci Dickson. Each child drew and painted their subject. Quilted by Staci Dickson and Emily Cross.
This was all done on silk dupioni! This is the best class quilt I have ever seen-I would love to have this quilt, as I adore children’s art. Imagine the fun this class had making their squares!
Sandra Bruce’s “Opal Jacket”-how fun is this??
This simple, edited jacket caught my eye-made by Myrna Raglin. It is beautiful. She made great use of commercial ombre fabric. Unfortunately, I would never ever have been able to make such a jacket. I would have quilted it within an inch of its life-then it no longer would be simple and beautiful, sigh.
Sandy Poteet’s (a MAQ member)”Prismatic Pool” was created by painting batting, layering sheers atop and then quilting-I love this piece!
Lorri Brown Wolfe, one of the MAQ’s, created “Carmel-By-The-Sea” from her own photograph and then dyed, embellished and photo printed to make this piece.
Joan Dyer’s (MAQ member) “Leaves” used a variety of techniques: hand dyed and discharged cottons, potato resist, curved machine piecing, hand applique and free motion quilting with a variety of threads. Just beautiful!
I hope you enjoyed your tour of the Pine Valley Quilt Show-I do think it is their best show ever!
