Houston International Quilt Festival 2013-The Quilts!
I’ll have a couple of posts on the amazing quilts at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. Somehow there were some key quilts that I did not take photos of-grr! There was something for everyone in this show:
Carol Morrissey interpreted a photo of roses sitting in her kitchen window and created this lively piece. The show does not give dimensions, but this is a pretty big piece and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I’d love to have this in my home.
Cindy Henneke used commercial floral prints to depict the armadillos that wreak havoc on her garden. Armadillos are just plain ugly so this is a pretty flattering interpretation!
Nancy says it took her 15 years to get the courage to cut into the circles she had made using the “curvaceous stripping” technique. Her combination of organic shapes, geometric shapes and color is delightful.
This is one of my favorites! I can just feel myself standing there, looking up at the Flycatcher and feeling the hot Oklahoma wind.
I love Betty Busby’s work. “Windswept” is about the sweeping changes that the seasons bring and how beauty persists through storms.
Ruth Powers worked from a photo and used her hand dyed and commercial cottons to create this charmer. No one can design and piece the way she does!
My photo of the write up on this piece was too blurred to read. I can just let my imagination go wild on this one-I just love the use of color and the feeling of light in this piece.
This one appeals to my midwestern background. I love the feeling of standing among the furrows. Beth is depicting the bounty that comes from a plentiful harvest.
This was made using collaged commercial fabric! I had to look really carefully to see that because it really looks like she used a lot of hand dyed fabric. Patricia says she is intrigued by the romance and history of travel.
Skockova says she felt dwarfs from a fairy tale were guiding her through her work-so whimsical and unique!
Aww-these charming guys just have to make you smile! Ingrid based this quilt on a photo she took of 2 dogs peering out the window with upside down sunglasses-giggle.
Jeanne shibori dyed the fabric for this piece. It represents the swirl of emotions that come from an out-of-control relationship.
Enid created this quilt out of a Jane Sassaman class-she loves the elegance and edited nature of the spider lily. I took a 5-day class from Jane also and she is a fabulous teacher.
Lois is also a student of Jane Sassaman and created this fantasy flower in Jane’s class. I love these shapes!
Vicki’s quilt had its beginnings in a Caryl Bryer Fallert class. I’m seeing a theme here-great teachers inspire great work!
Stay tuned-more photos to come!
