All my brags at once!
A lot of good things have happened over the last few months and I haven’t gotten around to sharing all of them. I thought I’d put them all in one glorious shot of shameless self-promotion.
Houston
I’m teaching again at Houston International Quilt Festival, the biggest quilt show in the world. I’ll be teaching 4 half-day classes and one full-day class, all on consecutive days, so I’ll be busy. But you already knew all that.
2013-First group of ladies at the Friday Sampler that were excited to learn to quilt feathers
The news is that all of my classes filled and they filled very early, long before the deadline-wahoo! It is such a nice feeling to know that students were excited to join in.
I think part of what worked was offering half-day classes. Many students do not want to take a full day of their precious Festival time for a class. The tough part is prepping for 5 different classes!

The icing on the cake is that one of my classes, Free Motion Fills for the Modern Quilter, double filled (twice as many signed up as there were spaces) so I have received an automatic invite to teach next year. Wow, that was totally unexpected and a nice perk!
500 Traditional Quilts
Karey Patterson Bresenhan, one of the original founders of the Houston International Quilt Festival, has authored/juried “500 Traditional Quilts” and my quilt, “Stars and Stripes” is in it!

The book is a fabulous collection of the best of traditional quilts, many with full page images of the quilt, some with detail shots also. I fell back in love with traditional quilts after savoring my copy.

I was thrilled to receive a full page for my quilt! And yes, the color is off, but I noticed it was off for several of the quilts.

AND…some of the quilts from the book will be on display as part of the Houston Quilt Festival, including Stars and Stripes! So I’ll have a quilt on the floor of the show after all-yippee!
Another Piece Sold
I participated in a challenge in a small art group in 2013. We took an iconic Wayne Thiebauld piece, Over the River and Through the Farms, and used it as inspiration for a slice quilt. Wayne Thiebauld spent much of his artistic life in northern California and also taught at Sacramento State. One of the participants in the challenge studied with him and we did receive specific permission to use his work as inspiration.
Over the River and Through the Farms-Anita Marshall, Me, Margo Wilson, Donna Brennan
The artist are (from left to right): Anita Marshall, myself, Margo Wilson and Donna Brennan. A local attorney bought it for his wife who appreciates textile art. It was hanging in a municipal building where he spied the piece and decided he had to have it. We were all so thrilled that it found a good home. Whoop!
So there, all my brags at once. Maybe there will be more soon! I’m not sure I can post next week as that will be the final run to prep for Houston.
What a lovely bunch of “brags”. Congratulations on all of them, and though you are very very busy in Houston, I hope to meet you there. Cheers, BJ
Thank you Betty Jo and we ARE going to meet up in Houston!
Such great news–all of it–for you, congrats! I was in awe of all the quilts in the book and could hardly believe I was among them. Yours is stunning–we’ll need to try to get a photo together at the exhibit–when we can find time?!
Oh thank you Barbara! Yes, we will get a photo together and I can’t wait to see your quilts too!
Wow!! I’m not that surprised. You are a rock star and I know your classes are going to be great! Lucky ladies who can partake!
Wow, thank you Roxane-now I’m going to have to live up to that:-)
And to think I get to carpool with you today!! Congratulations!
Thanks Kris-and a fun, chatty and informative ride!
Wow, how great! I have mostly seen your “white work” so its extra fun to see your beautiful color work.
Carpooling today? Does that mean you will be at PIQF? If so, I hope to see you there! I will be there Friday-Sunday.
Sorry Debby-I was up and back on Thursday. Loved seeing your piece in the SAQA booth-so contemplative and full of detail that draws me in. I really must try a hand stitched piece.
I’m thrilled also for you and that I was able to have even a small part in Stars & Stripes. I remember well the day we picked out the striped fabric. Thanks for sharing all of your brags. Kudos to you!
Helen when I show that quilt in my lecture, I talk about how those stripes MAKE that piece-without it it would be ordinary! So I guess we’re BOTH hanging at Houston!
How awesome for you, Jenny! Just think, I can say I knew you when you had to come into Tayo’s multiple times for lining for the same garment!(wink, wink)Look where all the trial and error has gotten you! Proud to know you and be able to follow your rise–Marsha
Oh Marsha I almost forgot about that! Yes, it took a few “tries” to make that one work, giggle. Thank you for your kind words.
Congratulations Jenny! I am so happy for you. I know there will be more brags coming your way.
Thank you Connie-oh I hope there are more brags! And then we can share cause I know you’ve got them coming too!
Cheers for all of it! Really exciting to have registrants for two courses and the automatic invite for next year. And the quilt in the book is gorgeous. Gotta get my hands on that book!
Thank you Claire-yes do get the book. It really is quite an extraordinary book and I know you would love it.
All good reasons to boast. We at International Quilt Festival are very happy with your success, too. Congratulations and see you soon. Judy
Thank you Judy-your words mean a lot to me. I am grateful for all the support and encouragement that I get from IQF. I will see you soon!
CONGRATULATIONS JENNY!! And well deserved!
Sandy
Thank you Sandy-I am almost reeling with delight!
How exciting — good for you, Jenny! I was surprised to see the photo of your quilt in the 500 Traditional Quilts book. I had only ever seen your art quilts before, and I wasn’t aware that you had that other traditional side to your quilting. :-) Have fun in Houston — wish I could be there, but those adventures will have to wait until my kids are a little older, I think. Right now it would create the No One Does Homework or Feeds the Dogs While Mom’s At the Quilt Festival riot in my home, I’m afraid!
I think almost every art quilter has come through a traditional quilting start. I very much enjoy traditional quilts also. I just ordered a huge coffee table book on traditional quilting. Oh you must get to Houston someday-so much inspiration there.
Congratulations!!! Awesome for you to receive such wonderful acknowledgement. I have taking a class with you on my bucket list!
And I have my quilting there too! Not a whole quilt, but I quilted a display for a friend who is exhibiting her patterns there!
Hi Kelly; Wow, how cool to have helped a friend who’s quilt is hanging there! Makes ya feel good. I’d love to meet you and see you in a class-Houston 2015?
Congratulations on everything! You rock (but then we already knew that).
Thank you Franki! Kinda want to pinch myself, see if it’s real.
Jenny, so nice to run into you yesterday at PIQF. You are always so gracious. I, too, like the previous commenters, are proud of you, and brag about your work all the time. Someday I hope to make it to the Houston Show. Congratulations and have a good time.
Sonja it was an unexpected delight to see you too and meet your friends! Oh girl you HAVE to make it to Houston! Thank you for your kind comments.
Hope you’ll be in Portland in the spring so I can give you a BIG hug for all your well-deserved success. Bravo, mon amie!
Oh thank you Margaret! And YES, I’ll be there and will hug you back-can’t wait!
Just catching up with your blog (as opposed to you in person, which we did yesterday). The inclusion in the “500 Best…” book was really wonderful news to read about. So proud of your rocketing career!! I wish you the best of good experiences in Houston!
Thank you Donna! It was delightful to see you yesterday-an oasis in the middle of stress. Houston will be fun once I get all the prep done!
