Sierra Gold Quilt Show-2015

October 8, 2015

The Sierra Gold Quilters Guild was hit hard by the recent fires but their show went on! Fortunately all the fires were gone, the fairgrounds were untouched and it was a beautiful fall day.

Opportunity Quilt
Opportunity Quilt

The guild’s Opportunity Quilt was especially appealing to me but no, I did not win it, sigh.

NOTE: For some inexplicable reason, I took many of my photos of the card and missed the title. If you know the title of those without, please let me know and I’ll add it.

Flowers for Mom; Sue Green
Flowers for Mom; Sue Green

Sue Green was the featured quilter and she brought a sea of exquisite appliqued large quilts. This is the third quilt she has made of this design. She started with a Better Homes and Garden pattern, and then added a quail, the flowers in the border and trapunto.

Simply Delicious; Sue Green
Simply Delicious; Sue Green

Sue used a Piece ‘O Cake pattern to make this beauty which hangs in her sewing room. I had a hard time choosing just two of her quilts. The applique and quilting on all was gorgeous.

Nose Gay; Ellen Dambacher
Nose Gay; Ellen Dambacher

Nose Gay is beautifully hand quilted by Ellen. In real life the quilt was subtly vibrant, a kind of shy eye catcher. It just drew me in.

Block of the Month by Kathy Beach and Terrie Van Syoc; Quilted by Shannon Freeman
Block of the Month by Kathy Beach and Terrie Van Syoc; Quilted by Shannon Freeman

Is this not adorable? Kathy won both the pieced blocks and the center. She could not figure out what to do with them, so her friend Terrie took them to see what she could do with them. She surprised Kathy with a finished quilt! Aren’t quilters the best?

Quilt by Martha Barber

Martha took a tablecloth and made it into this beautiful whole cloth quilt in the manner she learned from Cindy Needham.

by Joan Costello
by Joan Costello

This was inspired by one of Joan’s son’s favorite photos. Egrets and herons frequent the lagoon near their seaside condo. This is thread painted and the detail and realism is impressive.

Cityscapes; Sandra Wagner
Cityscapes; Sandra Wagner

The buildings are stitched and fused with crystals instead of windows-it has just the slightest shimmer. Sandra says it reminds her of San Francisco.

Birds and Arbors; Susan Boyd
Birds and Arbors; Susan Boyd

Susan started with an old paper pieced pattern which she redrew. She then added the birds and branches, inspired by the fabric. It is very eye-catching, both traditional in some ways and a little abstract.

Growing in Virtues; Julie Broderson
Growing in Virtues; Julie Broderson

Julie used a design by Elizabeth Scott. The Virtues refers to the 4 virtues of love, patience, fortitude and chastity. It is beautifully pieced, appliqued and quilted. I love those crows!

by Pat Bjerke
by Pat Bjerke

Pat started with a Bunny Hill design and then changed a few things and added some embellishments.

Montana Cartwheels; Joan Smith, quilted by Susan Boyd
Montana Cartwheels; Joan Smith, quilted by Susan Boyd

Joan and her sister worked together on this quilt. They were drawn to the pattern and since they are from Montana they were happy to see the designer was too. They learned how to paper piece on this quilt-nothing like diving right in!

A Study in Color; Ellen Dambacher
A Study in Color; Ellen Dambacher

Ellen used hand dyed fabrics to create this in a Gwen Marston Liberated Quiltmaking class in 2014. I love this quilt and I would love to take Gwen!

by Penny Dominici

Penny started with design she saw and modified to make this fused piece. The simple quilting really adds to this colorful piece.

by Suzette Heinrich

This sweet piece by Suzette is inspired by the view from her door. I could not get a good photo without glare.

Tim's Two for One Quilt; Ellen Dambacher
Tim’s Two for One Quilt; Ellen Dambacher

Ellen constructed this quilt using the quilt-as-you-go method. What expert use of color!

I hope you enjoyed your tour of the show! I’ll be posting on Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday.

The two quilts by Sue Green are sterling examples of exciting traditional applique work. I think it’s the spacing. The first one with the bird and flowers gives the motifs plenty of breathing space, while the fruits one fills up the spaces so the motifs aren’t huddled in the center of a vast amount of space. I love the multi-blue pieced borders on that one as well. Birds and Arbors is an intriguing blend of blocks and all over designs. Thanks for posting these.

Yes, her work was very inspirational to me and it is not my genre at all. It was just so exquisitely done, the colors so vibrant, the design spot on, the quilting enhanced and did not take over. I like your description-I see it through new eyes!

Thanks for sharing. Nosegay is one of my favorite traditional patterns. I have been hand piecing one for 20 years, lol. One day it will be finished.

That quilt was so lovely-the hand quilting and expert color choices just made it sing! Maybe that will inspire you to finish yours?

What a sweet note Mary-thank you! I enjoy our local shows and we have so many great guilds here. It warms my heart to know that you enjoyed my class. I loved visiting Montana for the first time-what an incredible place to live.

I suspect we do have similar tastes! Maybe we’ll end up at the same quilt show sometime and we’ll test the theory.

I was very impressed with Julie Broderson’s work at that show. Her machine quilting, on her own and on others’ quilts, added strong design elements. I loved her Thanksgiving applique, all squirrels and acorns, great colors.

Major correction! I did love all Julie Broderson’s work, but that lovely Thanksgiving applique quilt was by Sue Green. And I know that because I got to see it again at PIQF!

Ya know I thought so but didn’t take the time to go back and look. Both Julie and Sue make amazing quilts! Thanks Donna.
