Catherine Redford’s Modern Machine Quilting DVD and a Give Away

January 14, 2016

My friend Catherine Redford asked me to review her brand new DVD which is all about machine quilting on a home machine. I met Catherine at the Houston International Quilt Festival last year and we became fast friends. Catherine is funny, personable and…..

multi-talented: she machine quilts on a domestic machine, hand embroiders, beads, does English paper piecing, works with wool and is a Modern quilter whose work has been published many times. Check out her impressive gallery here. She originally hails from London but has been living in the Chicago suburb of Naperville since 1995. And she is a hoot!

Catherine’s 80 minute DVD covers all the basics of machine quilting from batting, machine set-up, thread, needles and pressing.  She draws out and quilts a myriad of useful quilting motifs and even stitches them out on mini quilts and placemats, all the while sharing valuable tips. The entire DVD is entertaining and Catherine’s demeanor is so calm and encouraging. You just know you can quilt these motifs out after watching the video.

More Than Twenty Three Hexagons

The entire DVD is both entertaining and fun to watch. Catherine makes beautiful, bold and colorful  quilts in the Modern genre and her DVD shows many examples of her work.  Catherine also has some unique, fun ways to alter  and stitch common motifs. She frequently combines walking foot quilting with free motion quilting on the same piece for a distinctive look.

I was struck by the similarities in some of what we say and I was amused to hear Catherine mention that she had taken classes from Diane Gaudynski who is also my Quilting Hero! I wonder how many quilters Diane has inspired through the years.

Thank you for sharing your comments about Catherine’s DVD. It has been interesting visiting the different blog posts. I didn’t get to the computer much yesterday so I am catching up today. My plan for this year is to attempt to quilt my own quilts, and all of you have been so encouraging that I will muster the courage to at least have a go at placemats and see what I can do.

That is great Deborah! Just go do it and you will love it-onward!

Catherine shared ‘Morning Breeze’ with us on her blog. Gorgeous. It’s wonderful that so many highly acclaimed quilters are giving rave reviews of Catherine’s DVD. Just seeing the little flashes of brilliance on the hop has been an inspiration to me. “Modern Machine Quilting” is definitely on my list to watch.
