Vallejo Piecemakers Guild Show 2016
After the Pine Tree Guild’s show last Saturday I drove straight to the Vallejo Piecemakers Guild show. What a treat to see two shows in one day! The Vallejo show is biennial and this is their second ever show, so I was pleased that I could make their show.

Pati Fried was the Featured Quilter for the show. Pati is one of the few quilters who truly spans traditional, improv and Modern. She designs fabric, patterns and tools and writes the very popular blog SeeHowWeSew with Laura Nownes. And she’s so fun to talk to!
Give Me Liberty is perhaps her best known quilt. Pati has collected Liberty of London fabrics for years. The Liberty fabrics are placed atop a selvage background. Pati considers this quilt to be a tribute to the friends she has in the quilting community that freely gave ideas, fabrics and designs that were incorporated into her quilt. It is just a cool quilt!

Pati was influenced by a 1913 Amish quilt from Ohio. That one quilt played a strong role in her journey into Modern quilting. Pati was purposeful in her method of constructing this quilt, piecing each block individually (not strip pieced) and combined big stitch hand quilting with long arm quilting. It is a unique quilt, rich in detail.

Pati started this quilt in a Freddy Moran class and it was one of her first attempts at improvisational piecing . It reminds her of the Golden Gate Bridge, peeking through the fog, hence the name.

Joan created a mini quilt from leftovers from the guild’s Opportunity Quilt. The little red dot on the card tells me this was sold!

There was no narrative on the card so I don’t know much about the quilt. I enjoyed the color palette Kristen chose though.

Lani created this piece from a block-of-the-month class. She used a wide variety of techniques to create the animals and I enjoyed the addition of the hand quilting.

Lani used a block of the month class pattern to create her garden. It looks like she had a lot of fun with the quilting!

I wish my photo showed more detail. Every year Francie makes a “Day of the Dead” quilt and in her words “sometimes goes overboard” with the embellishments. There were charms and sparkles and braiding and trim-lots of fun eye candy-not too much at all.

This was Darla’s first paper pieced quilt. I enjoyed her cheerful color choices.

Luci had so much fun making Orange Peels that she made another even larger one after this. You just have to love an orange peel quilt-in orange!

I’m not sure of the story with this one but the card simply noted it was made by an unknown quiltmaker. I got a very whimsical feel from those denim parts.

The venue was a bit breezy so some of my photo is out of focus. This quilt was the result of a 5″ group swap block. I think that is what created the delightful scrappy feel of the quilt.

Joel needed a charm pack for a class he was taking. He didn’t have one on hand, so he made one by taking random squares and doing a bit of slashing and adding. Love the result!

Oh you know this story-Betsy started this string quilt to use up some of her green stash. Somehow she ended up with more green scraps than she started with. I’m sure that has never happened to you. I am partial to strip quilts and I like how hers has that slightly darker square in the center left.

Joanne wanted a Modern quilt to be used in the fall. Of course I loved that quilting!
I’ll be posting to Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday-take a peek at the other links. I’ll be sharing some unusual tools next week-stay tuned!
Thank you Jenny, for such a wonderful write up about the show. It was such a great weekend!
It was great to meet you Pati!
I really enjoyed your thoughtful commentary on individual pieces. It helped me to linger and focus on each one of them rather than flicking through without properly contemplating. So I took away some highly satisfactory inspiration for future work.
What kind words Penelope! Glad you enjoyed the show.
Such a colourful show… but I must admit that ‘Give Me Liberty’ was the piece that struck a chord…
Ooooooo yes, loved Give Me Liberty! And it’s way more colorful than my photo would show. You would love it in person.
Our Lady of Perpetual Embellishment brought a big smile to my face. Thanks for showing the other wonderful quilts, too.
Wasn’t that cool? If only my photo were a bit more clear you would have enjoyed all the details!
I love it when you share pictures from quilt shows. It’s neat to see what people are making in different quilty corners of the world!
Isn’t it though? I don’t tire of quilt shows-guess you can tell!
That was a very thoughtful gift, thanks. They were very beautiful to see again weren’t they? I was a Vendor at our Quilt Show as Sunbonnet Sue’s Neighbor and we were so lucky to be so close to a few of those wonderful quilts, thank you for sharing.
Sincerely,
Rose Rienecker
You’re welcome Rose-it was a good show and I didn’t want to miss it and wait another 2 years!
I am honored that you wrote about my Rainbow French Braid! The only narrative I have to tell is that I have been obsessed with these patterns for years and FINALLY willed myself into making one. One night while browsing at Beverly’s fabrics I saw these bolts of Kaufmann Kona Cottons colors all in a row and I snapped them up.
Oh I love that story Kristen! Being obsessed with patterns and fabric? I don’t know anything about that….. Your colors were divine.
Noel Kimberlee, show organizer and Grand Chair of Vallejo Piecemakers, explained she was very pleased with the products on display and the level of enthusiasm from all involved.
It was my first visit to the Vallejo show and it was a great one!
