Progress, kinda
What a week! I have been working on unpacking 11 hours a day for 2 weeks now and I see some light at the end of the tunnel. I think I will be done in 2 more days. Then I will have to play catch-up with all the rest of life like groceries, errands, cooking and cleaning. Maybe, be still my heart, I could actually sit at the machine within a week!?
I know I have made at least 15 trips for containers. I am trying to maximize the use of my cubic feet of storage, so I need just the exact right combination of containers to fill each space. There truly is a lot of spacial planning and math involved. I am so relieved to report that I will be able to fit it all into the 2 rooms that are to be my studio-WHOOP!!
This is what maximized space utilization looks like! Oh and I labeled everything. I’ve gone through 3 cartridges on my label maker. And yes, there is an obsessive part of me that gets a ridiculous amount of pleasure seeing everything nestle together with just a wee bit of space in between. Isn’t that just the coolest thing?
And my little BERNINA collection has a nice little area of its own, isn’t that grand?
Just pretend all the cabinets are full and organized-this is how it will look. I wanted a clean, sleek look and I am excited about that. I see that one rogue yellow container. Well, that is unacceptable! He must be replaced.
Another view of a partially organized area in the little walk-in closet. Not much unused space in there!
I can begin to see what the space will look like when it’s done. Oh how I love that flooring! You can see my future design wall to the left. I will take delivery of my rolling cutting table next week-I can’t wait!
I love this tool-there’s no better way to create and insert piping than using Susan Cleveland’s Piping Hot Binding Tool. It disappears in my presence, just vanishes into thin air. If I NEED it and I can’t find it, I will actually go out and get another-I just won’t do piping without it. So I now have 3! And miraculously, all 3 appeared in the move/unpack. They will have their own special container now. Surely I can’t lose a whole container??
And in the midst of all of this, I was called to serve on jury duty. It was so hard to go from warp speed to sitting on my butt all day. Thankfully my service only lasted 2 days. I was actually intrigued by the whole process. I was impressed with how professional and courteous everyone involved was. It made me confident that at least in that court, everyone would be treated fairly and with dignity. It made me proud, for just a moment, in the midst of all the chaos that is America.
I’ll be posting to Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday. I always enjoy the links and I’m sure you will too.

Wow! What wonderful progress and your studio is shaping up to be fabulous! It’s so nicely organized you’ll never be able to find anything…LOL…just kidding. Great job!
Jenny says
Thank you B.J. It is shaping up nicely and I CAN’T WAIT to use it!
Joanna says
Oh my, what organization! Just be sure to leave time for the purpose of all this activity – to create. I don’t think I have the discipline to keep from messing with fabric or any other supply once I find it again after thinking it was lost. You know, you may need a map of your new rooms to make sure you don’t buy any more of that piping tool.
Jenny says
Yes, Joanna, I will need a map! Already I have gone looking for normal things like Scotch tape and such. My reorg will actually create more time to create and less for finding stuff!

Hi Jenny, I got the Terial Magic and used it on a larger partial quilted quilt and on the whole quilt 21″ by 16″. It worked very well. I got it from a vender through Amazon. $13.99 including shipping and no tax.
Would it be bad if I don’t wash it?The stiffness works well on that little wall quilt.
Where could I get the Moetsenboeker lift off or the Amodex? You could pot that info in you next blog.
I see what you mean by being organised. The problem I have is that a few month later it has to be reorganised. Ann
Jenny says
You don’t hav to wash it Ann, but I would be concerned about bugs-they tend to like stuff like that and might eat your quilt while they’re at it. I get the Moetsenboeker at my local grocery (Raley’s) and I see it is at Wal Mart and readily available on line (Google “Moetsenboeker lift off stain remover”). I am going to try to keep organized-I work so much better that way!

A Bernina collector? Shameful, lol! It looks great.so. Envious.
Jenny says
Yeah Janice, collecting BENINA’s isn’t a bad thing, is it?

You’re giving me an incentive to RE-organize my studio closet! It is in desperate need of organization. I started out with all those wonderful clear plastic bins too. The bins have been useful in multiple organizational efforts!
Jenny says
Well just do it Debby! You’ll feel so much better once it’s done.

New space and fresh eyes are wonderful, and I was glad to have a little tour of your well planned space. How lucky you are to be able to move things in a piece at a time to select the best spot for it all! I did notice you were using ‘every square inch’, and wondered if you’d planned for the unexpected.
I don’t have the option of closed storage, and work off of all open shelving in my studio. I enjoy seeing everything at once, but it’s not always ideal. My space is nearly always in flux of some sort as I acquire new supplies for another area, i.e. beads, specialty fabrics, etc. , and I notice how it makes some people want to help me clean up–even when it’s just been tidied to my own standards. We are all very different!
I know you’ll enjoy working in the perfect environment for you, so do enjoy it!
Jenny says
Interesting comments Julie. I say that each quilter builds their own quilting world. I do like things to be organized, and I will pretty much keep them that way. I did plan for the unexpected actually. I have several spaces that have empty containers, just waiting for the unexpected.

Looking good! How fun and exhausting it is to organize. I have a Piping Hot Binding envelope too and I agree, it is one of many things that “get lost”! My solution is this : I have a note somewhere (I use Evernote now) entitled “Where: Studio?” and that’s where I list the location of the odd tools that I don’t use frequently. The other things sit out on my workspaces…. It works pretty well though I have been searching for Karen Buckley’s Perfect Circles this afternoon. : – {
Jenny says
Oh I giggled when I read about your “Where-Studio” list! I have some pretty funny labels like “Weird Tools”. Aha-and my Karen Buckley Perfect Circles are in the “Circles” box…of course!!
Rebecca Grace says
Jenny, Amazon Warrior of the Label Maker, you and I must be kindred spirits. I totally get it. Your new studio looks fabulous! I’m so excited for you to get in there and get stitching again in your new digs. Congratulations!
Jenny says
Rebecca Grace you crack me up! I am thrilled with my studio and yes, all those labels.
Carol Baker says
Jenny, Love your organization and must admit to more than a little Bernina envy. Also, after reading your last comments, I just had to share your blog post link with a friend who works downtown as a Court Reporter. She emailed me back today and wanted to say Thank you! and to let me know that she is posting your comments on the bulletin board at work to remind everyone there that they truly make a difference and impact the lives of others. She also said that their daily routine often leaves them without time to remember and focus on the fact that what happens there is life changing.
So, thanks for your service and for recognizing the efforts of those who work everyday to make sure our legal system works.
Jenny says
Ah, BERNINA envy! Well Carol you too can have one. All of mine but one over the years have been used-makes it a lot cheaper. And THANK YOU for sharing my post with the Court Reporter. Really, I was SO impressed with the whole process. The defendant was guilty, guilty, guilty and lied on the stand about things we knew (based on simple math) were not true. But they were treated with dignity and respect and as though they truly were innocent until proven guilty. The jury came to a quick and decisive conclusion. Everyone from the court reporter to the judge to the attorneys to every jury member, all were respectful.
Carol Baker says
Ahhh! Having never used a BERNINA, I’m curious… which models would you recommend for someone, like me, who is shopping for a used one?
Jenny says
I’ll e-mail you Carol. Depends on budget, what you sew and how much you embrace technology.
