Late Fall Beauty in Northern California
I will be traveling again this week-no quilting for me! I should be back to “normal” posts after this last round of travel. But I had to share this beauty that I see around me-I love the tail end of fall, the last remnants of the season. I’m grateful to be here long enough to catch a last glimpse. Lookie:
My Smoke Trees provide year-round entertainment. I have both the purple and lesser known lime green varieties in my yard.
A bit earlier, this is how the lime green Smokes turned, both spectacular.
Of course the Japanese Maples are gorgeous in the fall.
I love the litter that fall brings. It’s not the heavy, overwhelming litter we received when we lived in northern New Jersey, it’s kind of a California litter, giggle.
A pear leaf landing on the declining hydrangea…
In the morning sun this is stunning!
The translucent beauty of the Japanese Forest Grass yielding to the cooler temps…
My granite boulders bloom too-the moss and lichens bloom with the rain.
LOVE this! Deciduous trees aren’t the only ones to turn pretty colors. This is my favorite shot of the season. The colors-so complex and gorgeous and unexpected!
I hope you are enjoying the last remnants of fall in your neck of the woods. I’ll be meeting my friend of 40+ years in Santa Fe this week. We haven’t seen each other in a few years so I am especially excited. I’ll post to Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday and join in the Link Fest.

I really enjoyed the pictures, Jenny! I’m not familiar with the Smoke Tree, but it really puts on a show. Is it the one Elaine Quehl is referring to recently? She has hand-dyed some fabric specially to make some art quilts of these purple leaves. My pine trees are carpeting my yard with pine needles–making great mulch when I can rake it up and move it to flowerbeds. Landscapers pay dearly for bundles of pine straw, making me feel rich when I look out and see so much of it for free.

I’m not sure what Elaine is doing. I do love my smoke trees! I remember pine needles – they were the very best mulch when we lived in North Carolina.

Late fall, ha! We’re enjoying snow and very cold temps in Ohio. Thanks for the photos of your lovely plantings. And enjoy your New Mexico reunion.
Jenny says
Thank you Joanna! I’ve had a great time here in Santa Fe. Hope you warm up sometime soon!

I sit here and marvel. We are well into winter here — dates or no dates. Haven’t seen that sort of beauty since…late October…
Jenny says
Ah but you have your own form of quiet beauty-all that beautiful white snow!

Thank you, Jenny, for this beautiful images, so lovely!

I’m from a town just north of Buffalo, NY – and we got spectacular color in the fall. Now, I live in southern New Mexico where fall color is…. green. One of my most favorite things to do is to shuffle my feet as I walk through a patch of dry leaves. Love the sound the leaves make.
Your photos are great and I envy your ability to grow such a wide variety of plants.
Jenny says
Oh yes, the SOUND and FEEL of fall-love that too! I did the same when I lived in New Jersey and now still do, just less of a chance to do it. I was just in Albuquerque! We do have a great climate in which a wide variety of plants flourish.

The smoke trees are spectacular! I have never heard of them, and now I will have to investigate. I’d love to have one in my yard.
Jenny says
You would love them-they are not hard and they are spectacular!
