Sutter Breast Cancer Auction 2017
The Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento offers a quilt auction every other year to raise funds to research breast cancer. I got a few moments to briefly enjoy the display and I’m sharing some of the quilts here. In most cases there was little or no attribution to the maker and/or quilter on the card. I’m showing them here mostly without names:
There were several one-block wonders of note. It started with a panel and this was the result-love it!
This was one of my favorite pieces. When viewed dead on the patterns dance! Note that border.
I love the brilliant use of color and fabric and that the maker chose to forgo binding. I’m pretty sure if I had seen the maker’s choice of fabrics before they were “shattered”, I would have thought they would not work together.
No, that is not real shadow-it’s simply a striking design. This piece really stood out to me. I’d love to have this one!
The colors are somewhat Amish-isn’t this a wonderful riot of color?
There were many lovely quilts of a bird or butterfly theme-this is charming. I love the “picket” border and that swag.
This was a group quilt and each block had it’s own unique twist. The quilting very much enhanced the quilt.
I was one of 9 contributors to this quilt. I love the design of this quilt and it was such fun to make a block. One of our group died unexpectedly before she got to make her block. We all miss her so much.
Such sweetness-simple design, great color and fabric choices.
This had every possible kind of fabric in it and with careful control of values it is a cohesive and beautiful quilt. Check out the border fabric-one I never would have chosen and it helps make the quilt!
What a gorgeous quilt! It was perfectly pieced, hung flat and the quilting was just the right touch.
This too was just beautifully pieced with fabulous color. Simple grid quilting was the perfect choice.
Gotta love a hexie!
Love the quilting on this.
Isn’t this stunning? Wonderful sashiko, hexies, color and design.
Just love the fabrics on this one!
Much more pretty than my photo shows-really gorgeous quilting and applique.
This caused me to swoon! Love the colors, quilting and what beautiful applique.
A Pearl Pereira Christmas applique!
I got to talk with Terry Harman, the maker, as she was working the quilts as I visited. Terry’s friend suggested the fabrics for the borders around the beautifully embroidered blocks, fabrics Terry herself would not have chosen. She loves the result!
There were lots of black/red/white quilts and this was my favorite. I love those tiny black and white squares.
There were a few Modern’s in the bunch. Gotta love that improv piecing.
Fabulous Mondrian!
The maker used torn strips and a lot of it appeared to be silk. It has the most lovely sheen.
Wowsa-look at that color! This one really has a strong impact-viewers were gaga over this one.
I love the makers use of that stripe for both inserts-makes the quilt.
I quilted and finished this piece began by Dianna Redmon, a member of my Sisters In Stitches group who died in January of this year. I was intentional in my stitching, trying to channel what Dianna would have liked if she could have finished it. I kept a light touch as I don’t think she was a fan of heavy quilting. RIP Dianna, you left us way too soon.
Locals, you can bid on these in person! Most have bid sheets that you sign, but some are held for the live auction on Nov 4. Find out how to bid here. You can have one of these lovelies in your own home-there is so much beauty there and it’s for a good cause. I hope you enjoyed a quick tour. I’ll be posting on Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday.

Jenny, thanks for photographing and posting all these quilts! What a beautiful show, and I hope the auction brings in lots. It would be hard to pick a favorite among these beauties, but I was especially drawn to the hexies with sashiko designs–quite unexpected.
Jenny says
Imagine going to the hospital and it was filled with quilts! Loved the sashiko one also.
Mary Bailey says
Thanks for sharing these beautiful quilts! I’m so sorry to hear of your dear friend’s passing. You did a great job representing her here!
Jenny says
Thank you for the kind words Mary. Representing a lost friend in my quilting is a skill set I hope to never use again.
Carol says
Jenny, Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos. I lost my mother to cancer in 1997. The cancer started in her breast and I have enjoyed helping out with the Sutter Breast Cancer Quilt Auction since it first began. Naturally this event is near and dear to my heart. Now that I’m living in Arizona, I won’t be able to get to Sacramento to see the quilts this time… I truly appreciate you sharing these photos.
Jenny says
Aww, Carol, thank you for the note! I’m glad you enjoyed the show. It truly is remarkable and an uplifting response to breast cancer.

I lived in Sacramento from 2001-2007. I have donated to this most worthwhile auction. I also helped hang it one year. It is an amazing display of love! As I recall, the entire hospital is filled with quilts! I hope that there are that many quilts again this year and that the auction brings in a lot of money! Thanks for sharing the show.
Jenny says
Thank you for all you did for the auction Sylvia! It did fill the hospital with quilts and it was just lovely. It was so much fun to see the surprise on everyone’s faces as they walked in.
Terry Harman says
Thank you, Jenny, for a really nice write up and a great photo collage of our display of the quilts at Sutter. All of us on the committee have worked so hard to bring this to fruition. My hope is by you and others showing the quilts and talking about them we will have a great auction for a very worthy cause. Thank you again and it was a pleasure chatting with you. I’m actually considering taking your class in Napa if I can rearrange my schedule. Take care.
Jenny says
Thank you for all you and your committee do to raise funds for breast cancer research. I do hope it’s a very successful auction, even more so than last time. I enjoyed chatting with you and getting to know you-we have much in common! Craft Napa is a blast-come!
Pam Gerkovich says
Thank you for sharing our butterfly quilt. It was made by the Thursday girls and the butterflies were from a friend who left us from cancer. It will be a great memory of her and fond memories we had making it.
Jenny says
Oh so sorry Pam.What a lovely tribute that quilt was to her.
