A wee bit of progress on my wholecloth
I am having so much fun working on my black whole cloth quilt top. It has become a lot more involved than I thought it would be which seems to be par for the course. I do. not. know. how to keep it simple!
Right now I’m auditioning background fills. I’ve mocked up a few pieces and I’m stitching using the same threads, fabric and batting as I propose for my quilt. I love that fill on the left as it creates a visual nap which looks different as you move around the quilt. But it competes too much so I’ll be testing a variety of other motifs. This quilt may have acres of auditioning!
I LOVE how this is starting out! I tried two different 100 wt silk threads on this piece and I definitely prefer the blue over the light gray used in the upper left hand corner. But look at the grasses stitched out! I used Aurifil 12 weight and I am shocked at how fabulous this came out. I didn’t realize it was 12 wt, thought it was 30 wt, so I kept my 90 needle in with no problems. The back however was a different story:
Yeah, we’ve got a tension issue there. I’m surprised it’s not worse–that’s a 12 weight on top and 100 wt in the bobbin. I will play with different bobbin threads for a bit. I actually like the way those fuzzies show up but I know I’ll be dinged by the judges so I’ll change that. But I am loving how this is shaping up!
Martha Ginn says
Jenny, I love these stitches. And I appreciate your encouraging quilters to learn to quilt their own work so they don’t remain in the just top-makers corner and learn to be true quilters!
Jenny says
As thank you Martha! It is one of my life’s passions.
Kathy Schmidt says
Lovely! Makes me want to try some 12 wt thread on something…you’re inspirational again!

“I don’t know how to keep it simple?!” That’s why you and I get along so well! :-) It’s great that you have the patience to audition all of these ideas ahead of time. That planning and experimentation that you do ahead of time is a big part of why your finished projects are so successful! I’m excited to see what you end up with for this one.
Jenny says
Hah, you’re right! We each have the same problem. I have a lot to work out on this one so I have to be patient!
Carol says
Jenny you never fail to amaze & inspire… 12-weight?!!!
Wow!
I’ll have to look for it here in my LQS. The back looks really great, especially considering you were using 100-weight in the bobbin. ?
I’m thinking about a new machine…
What machine did you use?
I’m guessing it’s a Bernina.
?
Jenny says
Yeah, that was an accident but i actually like the look. I’ll change it though because i know it will look like a mistake. I’m on a BERNINA 765 and i love it! If you end up in a new BERNINA let me know and I can send you a coupon.
Mrs. Plum says
Oh, that 12 weight looks divine! Hope you can get the tension issues resolved. Thanks for showing your experiments. It certainly encourages me to try different motifs, threads, etc.
Jenny says
It is divine! Different threads are fun to play with and can completely change up the look.
Linda McLaughlin says
That looks fabulous!
Jenny says
Thank you Linda- it’s a fun process!

Welcome to Over-thinkers Anonymous! ;-) I too tend to make mountains out of molehills — especially when it comes to my art work. But that black piece will be beautiful with your fine stitching. Enjoy!
Jenny says
Oh we DO have much in common! Thank you for the kind comment-I am going to enjoy this one.
Mrs. Plum says
Jenny, just happened to catch you segment on Quilting Arts TV this morning. Thanks for talking about “What if?” in quilting motifs. I often get in a rut and can’t figure out how to change things up. I appreciate the food for thought.
Jenny says
Oh that is so flattering to hear! Thank you Mrs. Plum. I am all about taking what you already know and building from that.
Linda Castle says
