Quick trip to Austin
I don’t have all my photos organized from taping for The Quilt Show so I’ll post about that next week. I returned home from TQS on Wed and flew out to Austin, TX on Sat for a family wedding. I have lived in Texas for a total of 17 years, at 4 different stages of life. I attended Texas A&M and lived in College Station for 4 years, then attended/graduated from Corpus Christi State for 3 years followed by Houston for 3 years. Insert 3 years in Albuquerque and add 4 more years of Houston 2.0. Both boys were born in Houston and are technically native Texans.
So it was fun to spend a few days in Austin for a wedding. I love how weddings bring families together!
I arrived just in time for the rehearsal dinner at a the Clay Pit and we enjoyed some spectacular Indian food.
Hubby is from El Paso and received his MBA from UT Austin and he is a die hard fan! We had to go to the UTA co-op to immerse ourselves in UT gear. Everything in the store was burnt orange! Bevo (mascot of UTA) was there to welcome us.
So I know what I could get Hubby for Christmas. How ’bout a Swarovski crystal football for a mere $5,000? He is a dedicated fan but I don’t think he covets this!
We had some time to spend at The Book People, a quirky, independent bookstore. I do like to source out independent bookstores in my travels if I have enough time.
This is a beacon! Whataburger is to Texas what In-n-Out is to California. I miss Whataburger!
It is Texas and plastic straws are dispensed freely. This is contraband in California!
That’s food porn right there folks. I’m surrounded by Whataburgers–swoon!
It is impossible to be most anywhere in Texas and not know you’re in Texas.
And of course Austin has its own brand to saturate the market.
Oh, there was a wedding after all! I left out all the family photos but I like this shot of the two of us together. Good lookin’ guy my man is! We even two-stepped (very badly) to a wonderful Texas swing band.
Breakfast at the airport on the way home–I had to have my last fix: barbecued brisket tacos with eggs and cheese. Oh. So. Good.
Texas:
- Proudly provincial.
- They don’t need you to like Texas.
- Quirky and fun.
- Huuuuuumid!
- “Don’t mess with Texas”-it’s all over the road signs
- Fish tacos, not so much; just every other kind of meaty taco–for breakfast.
- It is assumed you want Hot Sauce.
- Ma’am and Sir are normal parts of speech.
- Doors WILL be opened for all women.
- Beer not wine.
- Austin traffic-seems like it’s almost as bad as Los Angeles.
That’s my view, maybe a little stereotyped but not exaggerated. I don’t miss the weather but Texas brings back fond memories for me. It was a quick fun trip and I am soo glad to be home!
I’ll be linking with Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday.

Nice to see you enjoyed the break from your usual rushed life.
Too bad TX isn’t on board with reducing plastics use like forward thinking CA is.
Jenny says
Thanks Marlette-it was so nice to just be a guest, relax and enjoy! It’s funny though because TX is much better with water conservation than Ca where the streets flowed with runoff even during the drought.

Jenny says
Thank you Jollyne-it was a fun trip!

Loved this bit of Texas! I lived there for about 8 years, and I am still very fond of Texas (except the weather :) )
And Whataburger!!! I think that might have been the very first place I ate at when I first visited Texas!
Jenny says
Can’t you just taste the Whataburger? I didn’t realize you lived there too Debby!
Teri says
