Houston Quilt Festival Part 2: Quilts, Classes and People
I realized as I made my final pass through my photos that I missed taking photos of entire areas of quilts. It was hard to pare my post down to just this many quilts! I didn’t take many class photos this year because some students were reluctant to gather for a photo. It was a weird year all around. But here we go with classes, events and the behind-the-scenes stuff:
It was Halloween after all! This was the scene in the Lobby of the Hilton on Halloween night. There were other more bizarre costumes, just happened to catch this group.
As a student you may not realize how much behind the scenes work goes on. The Education Dept makes it all go smoothly and keeps us teachers going. This group rocks!
There were quite a few teachers that were a part of the Global Quilt Connection. We all met for a very casual bring-your-own dinner on the Green. It was great to meet and make connections, one of the huge benefits of teaching at Houston.
I was in a BERNINA classroom for all my classes, a pure delight. Cathy, my BERNINA rep was fabulous and kept the machines running. Our shoes had a lot in common.
It warms my heart to see this – attendees to my lecture coming up to view my quilts more closely and ask questions. I felt a warm and hearty reception to my “The Beauty of the Imperfect” lecture.
Ahhh, the calm before class starts. I love this scene: a classroom full of happy BERNINA’s, waiting for students to come. It is a wonderful thing to have a classroom full of humming machines!
There wasn’t anyone in my classroom before my first class so I had plenty of time to get set up. That is a real luxury. Usually one teacher is frantically trying get her stuff packed while another is moving in.
This was my first class, Free Motion Fills and Frills. Everyone was just giddy to be in person! Two students especially were just over-the-moon excited about what we were learning. I did not take photos from my other classes as students were reluctant to gather.
Okay, let’s look at some more quilts. I had to edit heavily just to get it to this number of quilts. Enjoy!
Over the years I have become friends with Barbara Black who is the main contact with Education and a phenomenal quilter and teacher. Barbara had her own huge exhibit this year and I got a personal tour with Barbara, a time I cherished.
A wide angle view of her exhibit. What a body of work! To your left is her “Lifetime Quilt”, a leader/ender project that was huge, one of the crowd favorites. To the right you will see her famous Red and White quilt that was the logo for Festival in 2014 for the Ruby Anniversary.
More fabulous quilts:
It was a great show; I hope you enjoyed the tour. I hope to be back next year!

Just spectacular! I need to get to Houston one of these years for that show. It is on my “bucket list” for sure but a quilt show that coincides with Halloween every year? What were they thinking with that date? If the goal is to deliberately discourage younger quilters with school age children from participating, that’s a great way to do it because Halloween and Trick Or Treating is a Big Deal when you have kids that most moms don’t want to miss out on. But now that mine are past that stage, I need to get out there to see those quilts in person and take fabulous classes with amazing teachers like YOU!

Hey no more excuses! You must go, you will not regret it. And YOU should be teaching!

Wow! Thanks so much for the eye candy, Jenny! I’m always astounded by the glorious interpretations of “quilt.”

Yes, it is amazing to see the gorgeous diversity of “quilts”, all in one place. There’s nothing like the Houston show! Glad you enjoyed it.

Marlenia, shared with me the link to your blog. You never know who is looking at your art. Therefore, I thank you, Jenny for sharing the quilts that made you “skip for joy”. I really appreciated that you included my quilt of Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Many of the quilts you enjoyed, I also enjoyed. The exhibition was a welcomed treat for the eyes. These annual exhibitions never disappoint. Hopefully, next year I’ll be able to take one or more of the classes. Stay creative and keep your sharing spirit.
