The Carson Valley Quilt Show – 2022

June 9, 2022

Photo from CVQG.

Did you know the Carson Valley Quilt Show was a National Show? I didn’t! I was blown away with the quality and variety of the show. There are judged quilts, many of which are top prize winning quilts, and also non-judged quilts. I loved that mix!

Hawaii, Utah, Colorado, Texas, and California from Humbolt in the north to far south San Diego!

I appreciate a variety of quilts in a show. I get fatigue if every single quilt looks like it took 3 years to make. I enjoy seeing lovely quilts that are to be used as…quilts, as well as quilts that will grace the wall of the maker’s home. I hope I can go to this show every year – it’s a pretty 80 mile drive.

I thought this was a good idea!

A couple of things to note:
–  I don’t usually show quilts that I’ve posted in previous posts. Many show quilts will hit lots of shows during their lifetime. I only show them once (unless I forget).
–  The show posted the description card right on the quilt. I thought I could take one photo, enlarge, and be able to see the maker, the name, etc. NOT! As a result, there are some spectacular quilts that I can’t post the photos of because I don’t know who made them. It’s uncool to post and not acknowledge the maker.
–  I generally don’t pay any attention to ribbons, so you won’t see me note that such and such quilt received this ribbon – it just doesn’t hit my brain.

So truly, in no particular order except general categories; garments first:

Madeleine Dress; Linda Johnson. Note the tiny doll dress!
Jacket, Brenda Croak. Gorgeous and thoughtful details.

There was a very impressive bed turning. A bed turning means there is a stack of bed quilts atop a bed and they hold them up one-by-one. Here we go:

Bed turning. There were many, exquisite quilts in the turning, as the guild has several avid collectors. Quilts dated from the 1860’s (I think) and onward. Almost every one was beautifully preserved. It was an amazing bed turning. Detail shots follow:
Beautifully preserved 1899 crazy quilt
Lovely, dimensional embroidery from a gauzy summer top.
Unusual quilting motif that I have not seen on a quilt of this vintage.
All the colored fabrics started out blue and over time, faded to these colors. One block faded to a strong red color!

And now the smaller quilts:

Tulips, Laurie Lile. Look at how she captured that shadow!
A Salesman’s Sample, Janet McWorkman. The linen base is from Sweden and hexie fabrics from Paris.
Mary’s Monkeys, Jill Trainer. Named after Mary Healey, former director of the Sacramento Zoo, who has since passed.
The Family Tree, Cecile Brown. This is just 400 of the 1400 leaves of her family tree!
The Great Outdoors, Penny Hanscome. Smell the ocean?
Tiles, Tapestry and a Teal Tail; Tami Graeber. Original design inspired by a Mexican mirror.
Ice Bubbles; Linda Waddle. Marbled sheer over marbled cotton to create depth and a “bubbles beneath the ice” effect.
Cuadricula – Spanish; Katie Pasquini Masapust was the Featured Artist; there is so much complexity in this piece, you could explore it for hours.
Unknown Title (my photo too blurry); Laurie Lile. Intriguing Modern quilt; great use of color and movement.

And now the larger quilts:

Pattern unknown, couldn’t tell from my photo. You can contact Swifty Stitches for more information. I looooove a Baptist Fan quilting pattern!
Indigo Cross Coverlet; Lydia McCowin; Qulted by Shireen Hatten. “Comfort Quilt” from the “Modern Heritage Quilts” book. Quiet and beautiful, one of my favs.
Keith’s Doodle; Cindy Cox. Based on her son’s doodle. Note the date in the lower right hand corner. Look at that applique! Love this quilt!
Animal Album; Kathleen Richards, quilted by Laurie Vandergraff. Based on a pattern by Kim McLean.
On the Wild Side; Carol Graeber. Pattern by Yoko Sato, Scrap Valley. Hand pieced, hand quilted, 2400 pieces. I. Love. This. Quilt! It’s joyfully wonky.
Twelve Month Splendor; Rosillis Rosario. “Patterns of the Past”, by Helen R. Scott. Beautifully done applique.
Tumbling Blocks II; Barbara Wooldridge, quilted by Sue Jeffery. Lise Neer pattern, 294 3.5″ blocks!
Stars Among Stars; Peggie Wormington, quilted by Beth Handy. This was stunning in person – fabulous use of color, spot on piecing. Edyta Sitar – “Star Among Star” pattern.
Detail, Star Among Stars, Peggie Wormington
“A Tribute to Jim”; you must read the label in the next photo.
Incredible, loving story behind the quilt.
Broken Star; Kathleen Richards, quilted by Laurie Vandergriff. Expert use of color; what impact!
Baltimore Splendor; Rosillis Rosario. Baltimore II pattern, Patricia Cox. Oh so well done.
Hosanna; Audra Rasnake. Original design with 1400 1″ leaves! Love the symmetry and precision.

Aaaand, Best of Show:

Holiday Splendor, Inger Blood. Beautifully done with lots of detail and crystals. Photo from CVQG.

I hope you enjoyed the show! Maybe you can make it next year?

Curious how many pieces hung. Looks large show. We (Pine Belt Quilters in Hattiesburg MS) also attach a description card to quilt and provide catalog of all information. We have postponed 2020 and 2022 shows and have scheduled a free one-day event to give away the raffle quilt.

It is a large show, I don’t know how many but I might guess somewhere in the 200’s? There was a description card on each and I tried to capture the card and quilt in one shot which did not work. Great show though!

There were 240 + special exhibits of about 40 more, and the balcony held another 10 quilts.

That was an amazing display! My guess was not too far off. Thank you.

I haven’t been able to quilt for months as we are in the process of moving. Your quilt show fed my soul this morning. Thank you.

Oh I do feel your pain. Moving is so disruptive and emotional. I’m so glad that the quilt show was uplifting! Thank you for writing. I hope the rest of your move goes smoothly.

I was there as a vendor and thought I walked around several times to see all the marvelous quilts, but you showed me I missed a few. This quilt guild was so fabulous to work with, everyone was friendly, helpful & kind (something that has been hard to find of late). Friday night at 5:30 they even invited us to their yummy potluck so we would wouldn’t have to find a place go & eat. I would go back as a vendor again in 2 years (they do it evert other year).

Have to also thank Jenny for coming to our Guild last month to teach us the art of free motion on domestic machines. We make over 500 quilts yearly for Mercy Hospital in Sacramento. This should help our long armers.

Isn’t that the way it always is at a major quilt show? It happens to me every year at Houston – people will post quilts that I did not see despite walking the whole floor! And yes, they are a friendly guild. You are welcome regarding the Mercy group. I am grateful that for all that your group does. And yes, let’s help the longarmers!

Thank you Jenny for this lovely portion of our Carson Valley Quilt Show. We did have over 280 quilts displayed on the ground floor with another 20+ hanging from the balcony. 180 quilts were judged. It was lovely to see you there. Take care. Terrie

I cried over Jim’s Tribute, and also appreciated the skill involved to make it. But my own Best of the Shown would have personally given that Best of Show ribbon to Hosanna or Stars in Stars. There’s that personal preference thing going on that comes into ‘judging’ decisions:)

Oh yeah, I would be torn on BOS too. Both of those quilts were deserving for sure. What a tough job it must be to be a judge.
