Spring Quilt Show Season Begins!

I enjoy going to area quilt shows, so 2 weekends ago I headed out in a raging downpour to visit a community about 50 miles outside of Sacramento to view the Valley Quilt Guild Show. I had never been before and I wanted to share some of the quilts that struck my fancy. Unfortunately I did not keep record of the makers of most of these quilts-my appologies to the makers and quilters.

This quilt “A Primitive Garden” won Best of Show and it was gorgeous in person. The maker, Emily Hyatt, hand appliqued each piece with hand-sewn blanket stitches.
x
Lin Squires long armed the quilt. I have long admired her work and this quilt really showed a delightful balance between the long arm quilting and the beauty of the maker’s applique and color choices.

Here are two detail shots of the BOS. I love the whimsical quilting that Lin did and how it added to the quilt without the long arm work shouting. It was lovely in person.

I was smitten with this beauty. I don’t think I’ve seen trapunto done on a 30’s style quilt before and I thought the trapunto really added to the quilt and gave it another layer of interest.

Here’s a detail that shows how puffy the trapunto was. It was a sweet quilt.

The show had a husband/wife team as their Featured Quilters and this I believe was done by the husband. I’m a fan of pre-printed panels-I know some don’t care for “cheater panels”. But look at what the quilter has done with this panel! The quilting really enhances the panel and gives it great texture.

This close up shows the quilting well. What fun he must have had quilting this panel!x

I will be including a picture of this quilt when I teach Intro to Free Motion Quilting from now on. I think this is a perfect example of how well-chosen quilting enhances and gives energy to the quilt.

This detail shows the vibrant quilting motif-isn’t that fun?

I am always amazed when I see a quilt show through your eyes. I’m becoming better informed about the quilting part of the quilt but I have a way to go. Thanks for sharing this with us.
