Bare Beauty

I love this time of year when my yard gets pared down to bare bones. I have many drought tolerant natives and when winter comes, they really show off their texture.

River Birch Bark
The bark on the River Birch is just spectacular-no Photo Shopping the color here-it’s just that gorgeous.

Crepe Myrtle Bark

The Crepe Myrtles are almost as beautiful now, showing their lovely mottled bark, as they are blooming like crazy in the summer.

Blooming Grass Head
All my grasses go to seed and bobble at the slightest breeze.

Seed Head of Grass
How can you not love this?

Grass Aflame
This is really spectacular! It looks aflame-it’s not backlit or anything, it just looks like this all day.

Heritage Oak
My gnarly Heritage Oaks grow lichen and moss…

Blooming Pot
Even the pots themselves bloom.

Granite Outcroppings
The granite outcroppings come to life with velvety texture and…

Mossy Path
all the paths bloom too-such lush carpet!

Succulent Bloom

Apparently no one told the succulents to go bare-this guy is a colorful counter point to all that bareness.

Makes me want to come visit your yard, right now mine’s all white.

Makes me want to take a walk in your garden too! Mine is under 2 feet of snow and ice…a beautiful landscape, to be sure, but I’m ready for some sunshine and color!

I’ll bet it’s beautiful! I do remember this time of year getting the itch for warmer weather.

Gorgeous! The River Birch looks like texture for a garment! Silk voile?

That grass ,is it a miscanthus? beautiful photos, nature in a garden shows us so much. Cheers from Jean.

    • jennyklyon on January 9, 2013 at 7:47 am

Yes Jean, I believe it is a Miscanthus-good eye!

What a nice reminder for us to see what natural beauty is around us. We are moving to a lower elevation out of the current snow and ice. Seeing your plants gives me ideas for what we might incorporate into our new home. The landscaping is already established, but we want to add our own ideas. Now the only question is do deer devour crepe myrtles and red buds? We have a herd of resident deer in the neighborhood so flowers are not going to work well.

    • jennyklyon on January 9, 2013 at 7:48 am

Sorry but I know nothing about deer and foliage. They’ll eat just about anything if they’re hugry enough-guess I do too!!

    • jennyklyon on January 9, 2013 at 7:49 am

Yes, aren’t the trees beautiful bare-showing their structure and their bark?

Love, love, love! Thank you for sharing. What type of succulent is that. I actually have one – inside of course, in my climate, but have no idea what it is.

  14. jennyklyon on January 9, 2013 at 3:11 pm

Thank you Eunice-it’s some type of echeveria, not sure which one. I like the echeverias because they take a little low temps and they also seem to have a very gray cast with purple tones and I just love that!

I’m trying to figure out how to capture all the wonderful textures in your landscape with thread and applique – maybe raw edge might work.

  16. jennyklyon on January 11, 2013 at 2:22 am

Let me know when you figure it out-I’d loooove to capture that texture and that glow-from-inside look! Yes, raw edge would probably be the way to go. It probably would require that I hand dye my own fabric to capture that-ain’t gonna happen!

Wow, wow and did I mention WOW! Great shots. I wanna visit.
