Elk Grove Quilt Guild Show-2015

There were two local quilt shows in one weekend-I had to clear the decks to get to both! I’m glad I was able to make the Elk Grove Quilt Guild show last weekend-a bi-annual event that is always worth the wait. Here are a few quilts that caught my eye:

Imperial Blooms, Clydeen Murphy

Clydeen created this using Thistledew’s Block of the Month. There is so much to like here: the fabulous colors, the texture, the embellishments.

Everything’s Comin’ Up Poppies, Kathy Sansone

Kathy used Donna Greenwald’s technique of creating flowers in fabric, topstitching them and then submerging them in water. This creates a soft 3-d look of a real flower.

Envy, Nancy Cervantes

Nancy started with a pre-printed panel and then added Klimt-inspired panels of her own design on the sides. I thought this was clever and beautiful. Is there a ribbon for Best Use of a Pre-Printed Panel?

Make a Joyful Noise, Judith Baker

Judith is a scrap-saver. When her basket of 1″ scraps began to overflow she decided to use them up in this colorful quilt. The colors are even prettier in person.

View From My Mother’s Window, Kathryn James, quilted by Candace Landerman

Kathryn’s Mother used to spend hours enjoying her view of the cows across the street. Kathryn created this scene from her own design using orphaned cow blocks, yo-yo’s and applique. It’s such a fun, happy quilt!

DSCN9814

Hummingbird Runner, Nancy Cervantes

Nancy used a picture from a magazine for her design. She free motion quilted the runner and then added fabric paints creating this delicate and beautiful piece.

Mardi Gras, Terry Harman

Terry was inspired by Gloria Loughman’s book. This quilt won first place at the Ca State Fair! It’s a nice mix of curve and angle and I love the colors.

Downton Abbey, Nancy Cervantes, quilted by Gail Parrish

Nancy started with a collection of Downton Abbey prints and used a pattern popular in the 1900’s. I especially enjoyed the way some of the edges disappear and her excellent placement of values.

Dragon Tale, Linda Bergmann, quilted by Lin Squires

I do not like to paper piece so I appreciate the beauty and precision of what others create who do paper piece. I really like her choice of fabrics and she noted that it was the first time she used Asian fabrics. Look at all those perfect points. This is from a Judy Neimeyer pattern of course.

Log Cabin, Judith Baker

I love the story on this one: Judith and her husband enjoy camping. When her husband is off doing guy stuff, Judith gets out her hand-cranked 1920’s sewing machine and gets to work! She pieced the entire quilt on her hand-cranked machine. She notes that it was quilted on an electric machine-whew!

Don’t you just love quilt shows? I’m glad I was able to make the Elk Grove show.

I believe the quilt you asked about was made by Pepai Whipple. Thanks for sharing the beautiful quilt photos!

Thank you Luanne-I mixed up the photos from Gold Bug and Elk Grove since they were on the same weekend.

The first quilt you were wondering about was made by Pepai Whipple…it was in the Gold Bug Quilt Show.

Thank you Linda-I took it off since I got my show photos mixed up!

Ooh, my favorite was the one with all the square in squares. I see the same person did the hand-cranked log cabin. That is also something I have been interested in for a long time (hand crank sewing machine.) Thanks for taking the time to share the quilts from these shows!

I love that too-and apparently it really was random. I didn’t realize the same person did the hand-cranked. I was kind of intrigued. We don’t camp but if I was in situations where I was out and about a lot without being able to use electricity, I would be looking into one. Glad you enjoyed the post Debby!

What a great variety of beautiful, interesting quilts! Thanks for sharing the show with those of us who could not be there in person.

It was a great show Rebecca-a little far for you to travel!

Jenny, Thanks for the great comments on our 2015 Elk Grove Quilt Show. Don’t miss this years (2017) on Sept 16 & 17, 2017. (Mine was the teal one inspired by Gloria Loughman, glad you liked it. )

And I’ll be in LA for teaching that weekend:-( Thank you for the comment Terry!
