Surfside Quilters Guild, San Clemente
I’ve got two posts again, on very different subjects, other post here.
Dang, I had to go to San Clemente in March:
San Clemente is the southern most city of Orange County and is known for its Spanish colonial-style architecture. It is unbelievably beautiful, even for SoCal cities. The vibe is gentle and laid-back, all the store owners offer friendly greetings and I didn’t get the tourist feel at all. I had visited 2 years prior and knew I would be tempted by the shopping on my afternoon off:
I got off light with a few bracelets and a gauzy top. Whew!
The lecture was held at a church with a spectacular view:
San Clemente has an interesting history. In 1925, the former Mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, purchased and designed the 2,000-acre community of San Clemente, believing that it would attract Los Angeles residents. Hanson created for himself, the “perfect house”, Casa Romantica, a local landmark.
I would have loved to have toured the home, but it was closed for the day. I can only imagine the architecture behind these doors.
And poor me, I had to take dinner right next to the ocean:
The Surfside Quilters Guild is such a friendly and vibrant guild; there were around 100 in attendance and it was their first in-person meeting without masks. Members were gleeful to see each other! They had two parades the day I lectured. One was of quilted jackets:
I would guess there were maybe 30 jackets shown, some with some pretty entertaining stories attached.
And then there was the charity quilt parade:
It was hard to estimate how many were shown, but there were a lot! They are a generous guild also.
I led a sheers workshop and they loved it.
Oh the colorful piles of sheers brought by the students!
Sheers are hard to source now, so I brought my own stash that students could use.
I doubled the workshop attendance after my lecture; several had left by the time we gathered for a photo:
I was so proud of their work! There were several newer free motion quilters in the bunch and everyone had so much fun. Denise the Programs Chair treated me like a Queen and I had a grand time, enjoying the Southern California life for a few days. It’s rough down there! I am so happy to be doing in-person gigs again.
I’ll be posting at:
Nina-Marie’s Off the Wall Friday
and
Finished or Not Friday.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on the Sampler Platter this weekend. Love those sheers! I’m a real fan of your newsletters- they’re always interesting and inspirational and full of your infectious energy.

Oh thank you Val! Ummm, I double booked myself and may not be on this weekend’s Sampler. If I am, it will be on Sunday, there are still things up in the air. Ooops.

Jenny, it was so special spending time with you. You deserve to be treated like a queen! What we loved about having you present your lecture and workshop was your joie de vivre, your knowledge and professionalism, your patient assistance and your wonderful sense of humor. Everyone had such fun and learned so much during the “Blooming Sheers” workshop. -Denise

Oh thank you Denise! It was such a great visit and your guild is so creative and welcoming. You are a gem!

Well, you ARE a queen! What a beautiful city. It’s so encouraging to see a guild meeting in person, without masks FINALLY. Our Charlotte, NC guilds are not there yet. If this keeps up much longer, I might have to move to California! Especially if you keep tempting me with all of those gorgeous scenic photos!
Jenny says
Oh no, still not meeting in person??? Even California guilds are mostly meeting in person. Part of it is the venue – if the venue still requires masks the guild must comply. I hope you all meet in person soon!
