Progress on the endless blue silk quilt
NOTE: I may not be able to get a newsletter out this Saturday. Next week is going to be tricky also since it is my guild’s show. I’ll be back as soon as I can. What, you don’t get my newsletter??? My newsletter goes out once a week (usually), on Sat morning, 9 AM PST. It includes a link to my weekly blog post, a Quilt of the Week, a snort laugh and usually a few more articles about other artists or something interesting. I know my readers enjoy it because I have an almost 2/3 open rate! If you’re interested, sign up here.
I am having a hard time keeping up! My post this week will be brief. Once again, most of what I am working on is not photo worthy. I will be visiting El Paso (Hubby’s family) and next week is my guild’s quilt show, the Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild. I am heading up the Fashion Show which will be spectacular this year!
We’ve not had a Fashion Show in 4 years (I think) and my guild has MANY talented garment makers. Our show will include vintage items (wedding dresses and more!), Renaissance and Medieval work, ensembles, dresses (some that were in international competition), skirts, tops, knitted and crocheted items as well as the most lovely everyday kind of wearable art. It is quite the juggling act to get the garments in, organize the show and match items with the best choice of model.
I’ve also been working on my blue silk quilt; I don’t know if it will ever end. Right now I’m working on the edge treatment. I was going to do a simple faced edge, but I realized it needed a special edge treatment. I settled on scallops, embellished with hand embroidery. Everything in this quilt top is silk. My photos do not do the fabric justice; the colors are stunning and oh, the sheen!
I have backed each scallop with a knitted textured poly fusible. I chose it because I am looking for something authoritative to hold that dupioni in place without shredding. I also wanted to add heft to keep them from flopping. I will eventually insert batting in each.
I dug into my thread stash and found some goodies, lots of hand dyed thread too!
What fun to hand embroider embellishments on each! I don’t usually do much hand work; it is a joy to sit down and play with these. They are so pretty!
Once embellished, I sew them together with a teeny tiny stitch and then trim very close to the stitching. I get a nice turn and smooth edges that way. Yeah, except for that top right on which was part of my learning curve😊
I pinned a few of them to my quilt to mock up how they might look. Yes, I like this, but felt it needed more.
Ahhh, the addition of those silk Prairie Points was needed. I like! I’m sticking with this. But I think it still needs a bit more. I will add a teeny tiny covered cording between the quilt and the edge treatment. That’s gonna be tricky to get it all perfect. This is one place where you need perfect. Everything else in this quilt is pretty loose and I want that attitude. The embroidery is not all buttoned up which adds to the relaxed feel of the quilt.
Just for grins, an in-process shot. No one takes photos of me, sniff, sniff. I take photos of everyone else but no one takes photos of me; woe is me! So I decided to do a selfie using the timer and it actually worked.
I will be traveling and then getting ready for the show. I think I will have a post next week, but don’t be surprised if I don’t. Locals, come the to Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild show Jan 31 – Feb 2, 10 AM – 4 PM daily. And don’t forget, Fashion Show daily at 2 PM. Be there!
