This show never disappoints. The Yuba-Sutter Valley Quilt Guild‘s show is always worth the drive. This year’s show held some lovely surprises. I include way too many photos below; I just could not edit out. Whenever I attend a show, I usually get about 20 min in and then start chatting with people and losing track of what quilts I got photos of. I know I missed some. Although I have comments in my little head for each quilt, it would take too much time. A few need comments to explain what is not obvious:
There were 3 quilts by a new-to-me maker that were just stunning, including the Best of Show:

V’s Vintage Plates, Verlaine McCaslin
This is beautifully hand quilted and my photo does not do it justice. Each of those plates is an image created from scratch with hand embroidery and quilting, applique, trapunto, ink, beads and maybe even more things I didn’t notice. Here is one close up so that you can understand:

Detail, V’s Vintage Plates, Verlaine McCaslin
Amazing!
She entered two other remarkable hand quilted pieces:

Vintage YoYo’s, Verlaine McCaaslin
Five hundred yoyo’s!

Grandma’s Garden, Verlaine McCaslin
Remarkable fact: Verlaine describes herself as a “new quilter and hand quilter”! The above quilt was her first attempt at English Paper Piecing. Oh. My!

Heart’s Journey – Child Loss, Kathleen Soga
This quilt represents Kathleen’s grief journey after the loss of her only child. The linen represent the roughness of grief, the sari fabrics evoke motherhood, the unpolished fabrics were deliberately chosen and she left in the wrinkles, imperfections and sagging of the quilt.
I absolutely believe that the viewer, me included, can sense strong emotions in a quilt. Not all quilts have that, but the viewer senses the ones that do. I have to say, as I was walking through the show, with all its beautifully crafted quilts, this stood out. It made me pause. It drew me in. You knew those imperfections were there on purpose. This was not an inexperienced quilter. What was the story? Once I read the card I was hit with the grief she must still experience. This is one powerful quilt.
