Foothill Quilt Guild Show-2014

I had a wonderful weekend filled with two quilt shows and a gathering with old friends. I attended the American Sewing Guild luncheon and got to catch up with sewing friends I hadn’t seen in awhile. I then took a lovely 90 minute drive back in full tilt glorious spring weather to see the Foothill Quilters Guild show. Unfortunately I only had 45 minutes at the show-and that included the quilts, vendors and Country Store! So my photos are particularly scarce this year-sorry!

Vleda Newman-About 28' of her work!

Vleda Newman-About 28′ of her work!

The Special Guest was Velda Newman! I took a class from her about 10 years ago and I have followed her work ever since. Her work is on such a grand scale with vibrant color and details that draw you in. My photo does not do her work justice-those pears are maybe 30″ long and her work is both hand and machine quilted. The shading and details are amazing.

The sheer scale is so engaging, you just stand there mouth agape. And in a Grand Forehead Slap Moment, I only took one photo! I guess I got caught up in looking at the detail as well as the scale and overhearing her talk with someone else who was asking the same questions I would have-photos just escaped my mind.

In the Wind, Linda Waddle

In the Wind, Linda Waddle

I always look forward to seeing what Linda Waddle has put in the show. “In the Wind” was my personal favorite. Linda describes this piece as “leaf prints on a scrap of eco print fabric”-I should be so lucky to have such scraps! I just love the color and movement.

Crazy Chameleon, Jane Haworth

Crazy Chameleon, Jane Haworth

Jane Haworth used her hand dyed fabrics to raw edge collage this happy chameleon. What vibrant colors!

Tree of Life, Mary Placentia

Tree of Life, Mary Placentia, quilted by Lin Squires

Mary Placentia made this wall hanging for her daughter, quilted by Lin Squires. What great use of color and fussy cut fabrics. The tree motif appears to be classic Jacobean and I wonder if the quilt is from a pattern or if she designed it herself. Beautiful design!

Amish With a Twist, Sharon Rizzato

Amish With a Twist, Sharon Rizzato, quilted by Shari Bahr

Wow, what glorious use of value and color! Sharon Rizzato made and Shari Bahr quilted Amish with a Twist.

Happy Zigzag, Terry Harman, quilted by Krista Withers

This delightful modern quilt was pieced by Terry Harman, quilted by Krista Withers. I was particularly taken by the whimsical quilting.

Gearing Up For the Future, Marylee Drake

Gearing Up For the Future, Marylee Drake

Marylee Drake made “Gearing Up for the Future” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair. I loved the way Marylee used color, value and transparency to move my eye around the quilt.

Primavera, Lynn Tubbe

Primavera, Lynn Tubbe

Lynn Tubbe was the Featured Quilter for the show. She had quite a spectacular show of many beautiful quilts and wearable art. Primavera was one of my favorite quilts of hers-it was beautifully done, colorful and just so dog gone happy!

Floral Abundance, Betty Kisbey

Floral Abundance, Betty Kisbey, quilted by Lin Squires

Betty Kisbey knows how to applique-Floral Abundance was exquisite. She did such a beautiful job on the applique-so smooth, those skinny little stems were amazing and her fabric choices were spot on. Quilted by Lin Squires.

Growing Up, Lana LaPlante

Growing Up, Lana LaPlante

Lana LaPlante saw this pattern in Quilt Mania magazine and decided she had to do it. I love her choice of colors and fabrics-it’s kind of traditional and modern at the same time.

I hope I get to spend more time at this show next year-it is always a great mix of wearable art, traditional and art quilts, applique and piecing, plus great vendors, a great General Store and great food!

LOVE Linda Waddle’s piece! And I’m really charmed by Happy Zigzag. Simplicity is often the most beautiful. Thanks for sharing these. I have to wonder: can the guild find another place to attach the label? Having them on the quilt is a real distraction.

You would enjoy Linda Waddle-a SAQA member. I know-the label is an issue. At my local guild show, Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild, we put ours more to the side, but still on the quilt. I noticed at the EBHQ show they put it completely to the side, which is nice.

It is too hard to choose a favorite! Such wonderful quilts of all types! Velda Newman…awesome! I have been a fan for years! How terrific for you to have had a class with her!

Glad you enjoyed it Laura-aren’t I lucky to live in a place with so much quilting talent?

Wow! You did well to take in all that in 3/4 of an hour — the colour, the scale, the detail — a wonderful showcase of talent!

    Oh it was aerobic Margaret!

Wow, all that at one show? How ever did you tear yourself away, Jenny? I love the chevron quilt’s machne quilting, too, and the Amish With A Twist and the appliqué quilts… I would not have been able to leave until I had seen everyblast quilt. Thanks for sharing these!

Sigh, I had to leave Rebecca. It was hard to walk through all the vendors and all the quilts so quickly. I didn’t even buy a cookie!
