The San Francisco Quilt Guild Show – 2023

My third quilt show in a row! I took a break and caught the San Francisco Quilt Guild Show on my way to Manteca to teach. They have not had a show since 2019.  The show featured 2 artists, Joe Cunningham and Barb Strick, as well as an Exhibit of yellow quilts from Rodrick Kirakofe’s collection. The Event Center of St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco was an impressive venue that felt like an art gallery more than a quilt show. It was very well done.

It’s always tricky to leave a parked car anywhere in San Francisco. I was teaching the next day so my car was packed with quilting goodies. Even though my SUV has a cover that completely covers the back, I had a little angst. The venue itself was lovely and the parking appeared to be safe. I walked in the door and asked the guild members there if my car was safe and they said well, um, not sure, maybe…. As a result, I blasted through the show and I know I probably missed some sections. Sorry!

Here we go, what caught my eye. There was an entire section that I photographed that I must have bumped something on my phone and the photos were all fuzzy. I’ve only written a few comments – I’m running as fast as I can these days:

This was one of my favorites from the show. I am currently being drawn to more traditional quilts with something intriguing about them.

“Laying it on Thick”, James Hunting Hove; from Roderick Kiracofe’s “Yellow” exhibit.

Oh I loved all those fluffy yellow yarn bits hanging from this tied quilt!

Cigar Ribbons, Collection of Julie Silber, from Roderick Kiracofe’s “Yellow” exhibit.

This one was way cooler than my photo shows. Love. That. Yellow!

Memorial quilt by Bonny Brodd Morley who has passed.

One More Border; Andrea Segura Smith; quilted by Becky Allemand

Log Cabins This Way and That; Fern Royce

Homage to Taupe; Cher delaMere

Les Oiseaux d’une Plume; Caroline T Cory; quilted by Sue Fox

The beautiful corridor in which Joe Cunningham’s quilts were displayed.

Michigan Winter; Joe Cunningham

Untitled; Joe Cunningham

Bicameral Lover’s Knot; Joe Cunningham

I’m so glad I got to see this show. I had a great day teaching at the Manteca Quilters guild and as is my current trend, I forgot to take a class photo. The class was packed, a welcome sight. What a vibrant guild with a wide variety of interests and all seemed to be open to new ideas; that makes it so much fun to teach!

Next week I should be back to my “regular programming”.

I’ll be linking up with:

Jenny: Thank you! so much! for your photos from the San Francisco show. It hadn’t crossed my radar yet. This would have been a great show to see live! I’m sorry that some of your shots weren’t shareable. Take care of yourself as you scurry about sharing your quilting joy and talents.

I had never been before either. It was definitely worth the drive. I think it’s a biennial show.
