Vacay 2025 – Part 4 – The Iowa Quilt Museum
My final stop – the Iowa Quilt Museum. I wrote about my other travels here, here, and here.
The Iowa Quilt Museum is a display only museum; they do not collect quilts at all. I did not even realize there was such a category of museum.
The Museum is located in a storefront on the town square of Winterset, Iowa, Madison County’s seat. Yes, as in “The Bridges of Madison County”, and John Wayne’s birth place. The space is narrow but deep.
Cute. Remember when J. D. Penney was a big deal?
Beautiful courthouse across the street. The photo belies the oppressive heat and humidity that day.
Selected quilts from the exhibit:
This museum is definitely out-of-the-way, but worth a trip. Alex Anderson told me to make sure I visited the adorable quilt shop on the square. Ah, but it was Sunday and closed. Next time! The museum’s display was a delight and the docent was helpful and knowledgeable about the exhibit. I’m glad I went out of my way to see this!

Yes, the museum is wonderful…when we were there it was Labor Day and the air in the Cadillac went out…so we ate Ice Cream from the local Dairy Queen (or what ever it’s called)….they had a house quilts displayed when there the only place to eat was a tavern down the street from the museum. Pizza and coke….stayed at the local motel, very nice place to stay treated with great respect ….we visited John Waynes home and museum…fun day we were on our way to Illinois….
Oh no, the ac went out on Labor Day? Yikes! It does seem like a friendly town. I would have liked to see the John Wayne museum if I had more time.
