Houston Int’l Quilt Festival 2023 – The Quilts, Part 1

By Jenny | November 9, 2023 |

I had my best year yet at the Houston Int’l Quilt Festival! This was my 10th year to teach – who’d a thunk it? I will write more about the experience, teaching and Market in subsequent posts. I am not sure what my timing will be on those posts, so stay tuned. I may just post them as I complete them, before next week. I’m running as fast as I can! You can find photos of quilts Part 1, interesting products from Market here and the Festival experience here. There were 6 quilts that stood out to me. I wrote a little…

Pacific Int’l Quilt Festival, 2023, Part 2

By Jenny | October 26, 2023 |

See explanation of this year’s show in Part 1. I just couldn’t pare it down to one post, so you’ll get 2 posts full of fabulous! Here we go, in no particular order, with occasional comment: Gorgeous silks and incredible details throughout. This is another that would have been up for my fictional “Judge’s Choice”. The teeny triangles grab me and the simple quilting makes for a superbly edited piece. Eileen is in my guild and I remember this charming quilt from our local show. She received a Judge’s Choice! The center is from a pattern, but that charming border…

Pacific Int’l Quilt Festival, 2023, Part 1

By Jenny | October 26, 2023 |

I have been attending the Pacific Int’l Quilt Show almost every year since 2006, yet I get excited about it every time! This year had a wrinkle. I had just come back from a 5 day event and was also prepping for Houston. About an hour into the show I began to feel overwhelmed. I knew I needed to take my loss and start the 3 1/2 hour drive home. I needed to listen to my body. As a result, I drove 3 1/2 hrs, stayed for under 2 hrs and then drove home. I know I missed entire sections…

The 2023 Sierra Gold Quilters Guild show

By Jenny | October 19, 2023 | Comments Off on The 2023 Sierra Gold Quilters Guild show

I attended the –Sierra Gold Quilters Guild Show in early Oct and I am just now getting around to posting. I had a very hard time narrowing down my photos; there was so much food work! Their wearables section was very strong – I counted 18 items! And there seems to be a lot of excellent applique going on around there too. I do think it was their best show and I do get there most years. I have short comments on each. You will enjoy the show: Fabulous use of brights and if it’s Dresden, it must be…

Frustration abounds

By Jenny | October 12, 2023 |

This will be a short post. I viewed the Sierra Gold Quilter’s Guild show last weekend and it was fabulous. But I just don’t have time now to go through the photos, fix them and create a decent post. I’m heading to San Diego for a 3-day gig with the Canyon Quilt Guild and 10 days later I’ll be on my way to Houston. It is crunch time! I’m going to catch you up on a quilt that I’m working on now that has gone through 3 different permutations. I’m not even sure what I’m going to do with…

Visiting the Quilters Etc guild and a Work In Process

By Jenny | October 5, 2023 |

Last weekend I flew into Santa Barbara and drove about an  hour northwest to Lompoc (now that is pronounced lom-poke!). It was a beautiful drive through the San Ynez River Valley. The Quilters Etc guild brought me in for a lecture and a sheers workshop. The guild provided me with a rental car (thank you!) so I was able to tool around a little bit. Lompoc is known for its art murals, 40 murals scattered about the city. They depict the history and culture of the area: It’s a pretty city and I found this scene at the end…

The River City Quilt Show 2023

By Jenny | September 28, 2023 |

REMINDER: No newsletter this week, I’m traveling. Not getting my weekly newsletter? You’ll get my blog plus other interesting and humorous content if you sign up here. The River City Quilt Guild in Sacramento, CA always puts on a good show, complete with excellent vendors and boutique. This year was a banner year and it seemed to me the quilting was particularly good this year. I am running out of time to create this post as I am preparing to go on a road trip to visit the Lompoc, CA guild. Unfortunately, my comments will be very brief: A well…

It’s Quilt Show Season and a finish! Sutter Buttes Quilt Guild

By Jenny | September 20, 2023 |

I am combining quilt show pics with a recent finish. Scroll to the end for my finish. I enjoyed a beautiful fall drive to Sutter, CA to see the Sutter Buttes Quilt Guild Show. They are a newer guild, about 15 years old I think and this was their 8th show. It was a small but mighty show. There was lots of great quilting and it was a very happy and colorful show: Gotta love a happy Christmas quilt! There were lots of fun details. Diana took Pam Holland’s class at Empty Spools and created this. I like how…

Nearing the finish line on the “yet unnamed vintage tulip quilt”

By Jenny | September 14, 2023 |

I’ve got a busy month with a total of 8 events, but I do have a gap between gigs and I got to quilt this week – wahoo! I am nearing the finish line on my vintage tulip quilt (let’s just call it TVQ for now); it’s time to attend to the finishing details. I am going to call my method of blocking VTQ “The California Way” because I use “tools” that are common to my area. The general method is the same for most quilts: wet, dry and block. As a review of how I got here, this…

A Judge’s comments on judging the Houston Show

By Jenny | September 14, 2023 | Comments Off on A Judge’s comments on judging the Houston Show

I will have 2 blog posts this week, this one about judging, and another about my week (which will be delayed). I am excited to post these comments by Deborah Boschert who judged this year’s Houston show along with Charlotte Angotti and Sharon K. Stone. All 3 are accomplished artists and very well-seasoned experts in quilting, each with a different area of expertise. This year’s Winner’s List is posted here. Deborah wrote about her experiences and posted her thoughts in a private Studio Art Quilt Associates FaceBook page. I received her permission to share her words. This is the…
