Dyeing, failure, destroying quilts and trademarks

By Jenny | December 9, 2021 |

Okay, it was a mishmash kind of week with no clear direction. I’m playing and catching up – it’s wonderful to be able to have the time to do these things. DYEING I have put my hat in the ring to submit a piece for Prism Play, a Regional Studio Art Quilt Associates exhibit. The concept is that each piece in the exhibit will be based on a single color, pulled from Joen Wolfrom’s color tool. The exhibit will be hung continuously around the gallery showing the entire spectrum of color. Isn’t that just the coolest concept? Can you imagine…

Thanksgiving, a finish and a few other projects in progress

By Jenny | December 2, 2021 |

Miss me again? It was a great Thanksgiving for the Lyon’s and I even had a finish! Let’s start with the finish: I really enjoyed making this piece. I love the sentiment, it’s one of my favs and so. true. Really, you are never ready, so start now! This piece shows yet another way to work with sheers and incorporate them into your work. I have a super simple method of doing those letters, something I’ll be demo-ing in my Blooming Sheers class at Craft Napa in January. And it will be in-person, in beautiful Napa. I sure hope…

Pacific International Quilt Festival 2021

By Jenny | November 18, 2021 |

NOTE: I won’t be posting next week on Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy a lovely day of thanksgiving with those you love. I will have my full family here and I’m excited. I will be back the following week, 5 lbs heavier! I’ve got a treat with a whole lot of great quilts to share! I know you’re not burned out on quilts, even though my last two posts from the Houston Int’l Quilt Festival had a total of around 80 quilts. I’m posting this out of chronological order, as the Houston show happened after PIQF. But I ran…

Houston Quilt Festival Part 2: Quilts, Classes and People

By Jenny | November 11, 2021 |

I realized as I made my final pass through my photos that I missed taking photos of entire areas of quilts. It was hard to pare my post down to just this many quilts! I didn’t take many class photos this year because some students were reluctant to gather for a photo. It was a weird year all around. But here we go with classes, events and the behind-the-scenes stuff: It was Halloween after all! This was the scene in the Lobby of the Hilton on Halloween night. There were other more bizarre costumes, just happened to catch this group.…

Houston Quilt Festival, 2021, Part 1: Miniatures, Best Use of Color and Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry

By Jenny | November 4, 2021 |

I was so glad that I booked a full day to see the quilts! In previous years I have frantically viewed the quilts with stolen moments between events. I do think it was a strong year for quilts and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. A couple of things about this post: – If I have posted a quilt before, I don’t post a second time. – I don’t pay much attention to ribbons so I generally won’t note that a quilt ribboned. – I don’t usually take photos of the big prize winners. It’s easy to find photos of…

Visiting Glacier National Park…in the fall!

By Jenny | October 14, 2021 |

NOTE: I have another post today, a review of Cindy Grisdela’s brand new book, Adventures in Improv Quilts. I’d never been to Glacier Nat’l Park before and I was thrilled to have some time to visit between teaching gigs. Glacier is “the Crown of the Continent”, established as a National Park in 1910. It is located in northwestern Montana on the US-Canadian border, about 375 miles northwest of Yellowstone. I can’t say it better than their website: “… it is a land of mountain ranges carved by prehistoric ice rivers. It features alpine meadows, deep forests, waterfalls, about 25…

Book Review: Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela

By Jenny | October 14, 2021 |

It’s a review, a blog hop and a give-away! I got my hands on Cindy Grisdela‘s brand new book, Adventures in Improv Quilts and I’ve got  a review for you below. If you’d like a free e-copy of Cindy’s book, comment below and I’ll do a random number drawing on Oct 21st. I’ll announce the winner here, so be sure to check back. First, I want to give a little background. Cindy and I have met in person a number of times at Studio Art Quilt Associates Conferences as well as at the Houston show. For the last few…

My Montana Adventure – Part 1, teaching

By Jenny | October 7, 2021 |

I’m baaack- what an adventure my trip to Montana was! I do miss travel and teaching in-person and I was happy to do both for 9 days. Today I’ll post about my classes and the travel in between Bozeman and Havre. Bozeman is gorgeous right now! It is a college town, home to Montana State, with enrollment around 17,000 students. I enjoyed my brief stay and I ate very well! Bozeman is a foodie town and I enjoyed excellent cuisine while there. Our classroom was held at the Eagle Mount facility which has a variety of outdoor and indoor activities.…

Packing, memories and teaching

By Jenny | September 23, 2021 |

NOTE: No blog or newsletter next week as I will be traveling and teaching. This will be a short post as I am getting ready for my 10-day trip to Montana. This is trickier than I thought to pack for 2 different teaching venues – one south and one north, 4 different places to stay, fabulous hiking in Glacier Nat’l Park (“Crown of the Continent”), a train ride and of course, plane rides. Here’s the packing pile so far: That is 90% hiking, 10% teaching. I weighed it and just my tech cords weigh 6 lbs. As I pack, I know…

3 days of free motion quilting fun!

By Jenny | September 16, 2021 |

I have long wanted to hold a multi-day seminar and last week it finally happened. I do feel that this is what I’d like to focus on in the future, it just felt so good, so right. I don’t know if there will be demand for such a thing, but if there is, I’m there! I love the 3-day format. My students were fantastic and in many ways the experience exceeded my expectations. For one, no one’s machine malfunctioned – can you believe that? Out of 15 students, everyone not only knew their machine well, but they had excellent machines…
