NOTE: I have more posts on the show here, here, and here. I’m baaack! Twenty-two days of travel in a month is plenty for me. Today’s posts include part of my photos from the Houston show, which was fabulous by the way! Lots of color, exquisite quilting and design, and a few surprises. I wish I had the time to both organize them by section and make comments, but I just cannot find that time. You will enjoy the eye candy! I think I will have several more posts: more photos, and a post on my experiences with teaching, market,…
What a wild week! And I don’t have many photos to show for it either. It was Labor Day and my Son, DIL and grands came to visit – yay!! It was such a lovely weekend. Being a Gramma is just Grand. My 4.5 yr old Grandson was just so busy! He looooooooves vehicles of any type. It turned out the Verbena were just at the very end of their full bloom and looked great unless you shook them; then they yielded their petals. Of course those petals had to be harvested and what better way to harvest them than…
It’s prep time for me; the New England Quilt Seminar is coming up Sept 21 – 28 (that includes travel days), Houston follows on its heels 6 days later with my son’s wedding in Tucson just 5 days after that. So I have massive prep to do. That does not make for a sexy blog post. This pile is soon to be joined by a stack of blue squares and batting to form 250 practice sandwiches. I will then add 5 plastic “pins” in each sandwich, bundle them up and ship along with other bulky supplies for Houston. I…
NOTE: I may not have a newsletter this week as I am teaching Friday and Saturday. I’ll play it by ear. I recently co-judged the Delta Quilters Guild show with 9 other judges. The DQG has a unique judging set up, using 10 volunteer judges who work in teams of 2, for ribbons only, no comments. It allows the guild to have a judged show with little expense other than a yummy lunch. The trade-off is that there are no comments. There were many items I judged that I so wanted to comment upon! But it’s a reasonable trade-off.…
I decided to post the Iowa Quilt Museum into another post and include all my travel photos here. I wrote about my other travels here, and here. To recap, I drove 1,200 miles in 4 days, traveled through 5 states, one quilt museum, one quilt show, one Aunt, a Cousin and visited with my friend since second grade in my hometown. I amused myself while driving by going old school: radio tuned to local stations and old rock (“Juke Box Hero” et al). When my drive was over, I was ready to get out of that car, but it…
My final stop – the Iowa Quilt Museum. I wrote about my other travels here, here, and here. The Iowa Quilt Museum is a display only museum; they do not collect quilts at all. I did not even realize there was such a category of museum. The Museum is located in a storefront on the town square of Winterset, Iowa, Madison County’s seat. Yes, as in “The Bridges of Madison County”, and John Wayne’s birth place. The space is narrow but deep. Cute. Remember when J. D. Penney was a big deal? Beautiful courthouse across the street. The photo belies…
My last visit to Quilt National was 2021. QN is considered the world’s premiere showcase of the Best of Contemporary Art. Out of 695 quilts submitted, only 84 were chosen. What impressed me the most this year was the use of sheer material, which is right in the epicenter of my interests; the exhibit was highly inspiring! I wrote about my other travels here, here, and here. I have a zillion photos, so I only comment if there is something unusual about the materials used, or if it was one of my favs. I am so happy that QN changed…
My “Midwestern Adventure” came in two parts: the first, a visit to Denver and the second a solo to 5 states, friends and family, and 3 quilt shows. I wrote about my other travels here, here, and here. My Denver trip was for a family reunion of my side. My oldest son spoke at a Conference, so he stayed on and family joined him. It was wonderful to be there with Hubby, oldest son, youngest son and fiance, and both my sisters plus one Hubby. My brother could not attend. Denver has so much to offer! We all stayed…
NOTE: I won’t be writing next week; be back on the 30th…I hope. I am unsure about the newsletter this week; I will take that as it comes. I traveled to Southern California to visit the San Fernando Valley Quilt Association. What a guild! I felt embraced by the lovely outreach phone call before I arrived from Julie, the President, by the many members who drove me around and fed me and the bright and happy students in my class. I flew into Burbank, a 94 year old airport that makes you feel like you are in a time warp.…
NOTE: I probably will not post next week; the week of the 17th I should be able to, then a 2-week hiatus as I travel. Quilty wise it’s been a varied week. I was able to attend the monthly Babylock Sashiko machine workshop with Ellen Schmidt at Meissner Folsom and we did this: Let me explain. Ellen did the quilt-the-design-on-paper-with-a-naked-needle thing; then we pounced it upon our project. Ellen provided the stabilized background. I didn’t have any light thread with me; this would have turned out better with a higher contrast thread. But I love this! All it needs is…
