The River City Quilters’ Guild is one of the largest in the area and they always put on a great show. This year’s show was exceptional. They had not had a show in 3 years so there was a backlog of great work to be shown. I assisted in the Judging Room and got a sneak peek at all the talent. I couldn’t wait to see the hung show and I was not disappointed! Please note, it was sooooo hard to narrow down my photos. Even at that I have processed and posted 77 photos! I forgot to take photos…
It has been a time for both Grandchildren visits and a day of assisting with the River City Quilt Guild judging day. The show is this weekend in Sacramento at the Masonic Center on H Street, chose to Sac State. You MUST go if you are in town. The quilts are spectacular! We had the joy of caring for our Grands, 5 and 2, for 4+ days as their parents took their first ever multi-day trip away from their children. It was so wonderful to spend that much time with them and learn their full day routines on their own…
I am in Week 3 of my online live class “SEE Like and Artist” with Donalee Kennedy and yes, I am learning to “see”! This week I worked on 2 studies for class, as well as a trapunto sample for my (hopeful) Trapunto class. One thing that makes this class even more instructive is the other students. All the other students are established artists with a mature sense of design. I think most have displayed their work in juried exhibits in galleries. As a result, the critiques are enormously useful to me. We all participate in each student’s critique. I…
Some weeks can be super busy, yet not have a lot to post about. This has been one of those weeks. I spent daaaaays getting videos ready for a zoom class on Modern Fills that I taught last Saturday to the Guild of Quilters of Contra Costa County. The class was absolutely fabulous with lots of interaction and questions, so it was well worth the work. When I teach online, I rarely demo live. Why? Wellll, thread breaks, bobbins run out, things misbehave for no known reason, bobbins barf, and scissors go to the other side of the moon. I…
Yes, I ghosted you all last week. I forgot it was Labor Day weekend and I had lots to do to prep for a visit from my Grands! I doubt I will do a newsletter this weekend. I’ll miss again. I am teaching and have a lot of prep work to do for an upcoming online class. So, the Grand’s visit: I just love shoe photos! On to my abstract piece… I am in a time crunch and this will be an abbreviated account of all that I did. This piece consumed me for 5 weeks and I am…
I posted my quilt photos on another post here. I loved exploring the city of Grand Rapids! It is a river town and I hail from a river town, so I felt a kinship from the start. I stayed at the Amway Grand and had a lovely room with a great corner view. I watched the sun set each evening, a lovely end to the day. I could walk downtown Grand Rapids alone and feel safe. I ALWAYS am heads up no matter where I am, but I felt comfortable walking a downtown park by the hotel and the surrounding…
I just returned from AQS Grand Rapids and what a show! I have a lot of photos to follow, but first let me review how I chose what to post. I don’t generally post photos of the big prize winners as there are professional photos of those quilts available on the AQS site. I also try not to post photos of quilts I have posted before…but sometimes I forget and post twice. I have a separate post about teaching and hanging out in Grand Rapids. So here is a sampling of a great show, in no particular order; enjoy! Pretty…
NOTE: No blog post next week; I’ll be teaching at AQS Grand rapids. I almost get more questions about shoes and feet than quilts! In the last 8 years I have had to “reshoe” my entire shoe wardrobe 4 times to accommodate my then-current foot condition. That is expensive and an unpleasant process as I search for cute but comfy-for-me shoes. I still cling to cute as much as possible. Apparently many of my readers have foot issues too, so I decided to write about what I’ve done. I have had plantar fasciitis, as well as a general condition of…
I love the California State Fair with all its quirky and eccentric ways. It’s the unbelievably unhealthy food, the aggressive vendors, the arts and crafts area, the animal and farm exhibits and of course we have a whole area for both CBD and wine. The Fair is a real melting pot, with youth from city to farm, families, performers, and people of all stripes. Now that is so California. Attendance was down this year and I hope the Fair attendance improves when it’s moved to the fall next year. There was a huuuuge improvement to the Crafts section (all manner…
Amazingly enough I finished a baby quilt and a class sample this week! Both were easy and straight forward. I deliberately created space this summer to be teaching-free and I’m trying to get as much done as possible. I worked really hard on my abstract class this week and I just don’t have time to create a post about that now. I also attended the California State Fair last week and I have a bunch of great photos of mainly art from that. A photo-heavy post takes a lot of time so I’m waiting on that also. And, I’ve promised…
