News, Something New, a New Newsletter…and an Epilogue

By Jenny | February 23, 2017 |

Don’t you just love how quilters help each other? I title one of my lectures “Quilting is a Contact Sport” based on that premise. This week my friend Helen came to my rescue: I was working on a project at night and I ran out of King Tut #903. Horrors! I posted to FaceBook: “How will I live-ran out of King Tut color #903-need it now!” You KNOW the feeling, right? I received many responses but Helen got right on it and called me, wondering if I could meet her. No hesitation there-sure! Now this was on one of those blustery,…

2017 Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild Show-The Big Quilt Room

By Jenny | February 16, 2017 |

On to the Big Quilt Room: Debi Henry, quilted by Brandi Rayburn, “Crazy Two Colored Pineapple”. Debi saw a photo of this quilt done on a cruise with Anita Grossman-Solomon and knew she had to make it. I love how graphic it is, beautifully pieced and gorgeous quilting. Chris Bender, quilted by Sandi Fong, “Leaves”. Chris modified a pattern by Donna Lynn Thomas. There are 2,300 pieces in this quilt! Her use of color makes the leaves “fuzzy”-kinda cool! Shireen Hattan, “Amish With A Twist Slightly Twisted”. Shireen picked this up from a Nancy Rink Block of the Month close…

2017 Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild Show-Small Quilts, Wearables, Other

By Jenny | February 9, 2017 |

I get so excited about my local guild’s show-it’s always fabulous! Enjoy a peek at this year’s Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild show: Best of Show, Inger Blood: “A Taste of Tie”. Inger inherited her father-in-law’s silk ties which she deconstructed and pieced into these Log Cabin blocks. She designed the quilt in EQ7. Inger works on a domestic machine! In the detail you see her exquisite quilting and the sparkle of the crystals! It shimmered as it hung. Judge’s Choice, Karla Delner: “Fabulous Flowers and Fantasy Feathers”. Karla did a bit of redesigning of one of Wendy Williams’ wool felt designs.…

Selling a Quilt

By Jenny | February 2, 2017 |

I’ve got a short post today as I’m readying for a weekend engagement in Southern California. I recently sold a quilt that I didn’t really set out to sell. It is one of my best pieces and also one of my most edited pieces. I wonder if that is a coincidence… So here’s the piece. If you follow my blog you’ve seen this more than once. And I wrote previously about its acceptance into the Art=Quilts=Art juried exhibition at the Schweinfurth Museum in Auburn, New York. I cannot find my paperwork on the exhibition, but I am pretty sure I had…

Country Crossroads Quilters Show-2016

By Jenny | January 26, 2017 |

I’d never been to the “Heart of the Valley” show of the Country Crossroads Quilters of Modesto. Theirs is a biennial show held in the Modesto Centre Plaza, a sprawling, well-lighted  venue. The show was beautiful! The aisles were spacious and there were lots of chairs throughout the show with great views of the quilts and incredible lighting on the quilts. Penni Barger and Kathryn Sandner were the Featured Quilters. The above quilt was one of Penni’s featured quilts, “Metro Re of the Western Hemisphere”, a thread painted quilt that has previously won an award for Best Use of Thread.…

Craft Napa 2017

By Jenny | January 19, 2017 |

If you didn’t make it to Craft Napa this year, you have to make it next year! Really, this is a magical event like none other. This year I got to be both student and teacher and I’m still excited about the experience. How much better does it get: teaching my first day and playing with Melissa Averinos and Lynn Krawczyk the next two days? Craft Napa is like an ultimate play date for adults. I have such a hard time putting it into words. It was non-stop fun and creativity! Wed started pretty early with a morning presentation at the…

Real Life-New Year’s and Beyond

By Jenny | January 5, 2017 |

It’s been a mishmash of life in the last week and not a whole lot of quilt or art making went on. But it’s been a wild ride from my perspective. Somehow at this late point in life, I have become An Entertainer. Cook? Oh yeah, but entertain? This is a most unlikely role for me to play. My parents literally never entertained and it has been something I have done maybe once a year at best since. When the couple that actually knows how to entertain was not able to host New Year’s Eve, DH and I decided to…

2016 Year-End Review-A wild ride!

By Jenny | December 29, 2016 |

This year has been more than intense, filled with successes and failures but mostly very, very filled. In a nutshell: -I have tried new-to-me techniques: pojagi and acid dyeing organza. I have not yet completed projects with these techniques but oh do I have plans! -My work has been accepted into 2 prestigious shows: My Corner of the World, an international SAQA exhibit currently on display at the Stratford Perth Museum, Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Quilts=Art=Quilts, in Auburn, New York –My son was married in October in Chicago! -I survived a whole house remodel that began in January and concluded in…

Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento

By Jenny | December 22, 2016 |

It’s been another whirlwind week for me, with wild variations in my activities. I’m back home now for a month and it’s been so nice to settle back into my life-I have a good life! I visited the Santa Fe, NM area last week and met my friend of 40 years there. Lynn and I were hippie chicks in the 70’s…oh but that’s another long story! We had not seen each other in a few years so it was a treat for both of us. We rented a roomy AirBNB with original art by the owners and a well-stocked kitchen.…

Late Fall Beauty in Northern California

By Jenny | December 15, 2016 |

I will be traveling again this week-no quilting for me! I should be back to “normal” posts after this last round of travel. But I had to share this beauty that I see around me-I love the tail end of fall, the last remnants of the season. I’m grateful to be here long enough to catch a last glimpse. Lookie: My Smoke Trees provide year-round entertainment. I have both the purple and lesser known lime green varieties in my yard. A bit earlier, this is how the lime green Smokes turned, both spectacular. Of course the Japanese Maples are gorgeous…
